Find my IP address remotely

I'm going away for a few months this summer and I will need to be able to find my home computer remotely. I'm gonna run something like VNC to connect to it, however i'll need to know my ip address.

So far I've come up with:

    1. Have my pc automatically log into an irc room. I can then log in and see my ip address.

    2. Scan my providers ip range.

Both of these aren't great. I would like something simpler. I don't want to have to pay for a static ip either. Has anyone a better solution?

If I could send a text to an old phone I have connected to my serial port that would text me back with the address it would be nice but I doubt i'll find software to do it.

Any help would be great! Thanks

If your pc is running linux (you don't mention if it is - vnc runs on linux and windows) it would be fairly straightforward to write a script that runs whenever the system boots and emails you it's network configuration....

Dynamic DNS. You get a free domain name, and the IP it points to is automatically updated if your machine's IP changes.

Thanks but its going to be running XP. I think its looking like the irc method unless someone else has any ideas?

[EDIT] Looks like we posted at the same time. That looks like a good idea. Have you used it yourself? I can just have it set to run on startup and it will register my new ip address with dynDNS.org? Sounds perfect![/EDIT]

I've a static IP, so I've no need for it. But I have a couple of friends running FTP servers with dynamtic IP's that use this. I can just connect to theirname.dyndns.org, and it always gets me to the right address. I presume it's some sort of service/script running that automatically sends updates to the dns servers, I know they don't have to do anything manually.

    ive used it,
    works pretty well.
you just run a service in the background and it contacts the host every few minutes with the ip.

edit the one i used was
    www.no-ip.org
similar im sure but thats the one i was talking about
