run time error!

We had been running Norton Anti-virus on our home PC. Our subscription for the updates was nearly up so my husband bought the renewal (Norton Internet 2005). He downloaded and installed this. Since then there has been a run-time error displayed every time you try to start Norton anti-virus. It says there is a problem with the file ......\Shared\Norton\ccEvnt.exe. In his innocence my husband deleted this file!!

Now internet explorer won't work, we can't get onto the web at all. I have plugged broadband out because I'm nervous that if we don't have virus protection that the PC will become infected.

I tried to un-install the Norton Internet 2005 but it won't let me without logging in (to Norton). I can't log either because the option is greyed out.

I know that it's difficult for anyone reading this to know exactly what's up with it, but does anyone have any ideas about what I should try next?

    Heh. Prudent, but overkill.

Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs. Uninstall Norton 2005.

Reinstall it and lets us know how you get on.

There's been problems with this all over the internet, the last time I saw it the advice to fix it was to uninstall it, get the latest serive pack for window (for windows xp it's sp2), update your BIOS to the latest version, reinstall Norton, run the live update 5 times restarting the computer each time afterwards. If you or your husband are not familiar with updating the BIOS then you should probably skip that step and try the rest.

Alternatly you could try and get you money back for norton and go with the free AVG

<edit> By the way I'm assuming your husband deleted that file because of the problem. If the problem is actually because of him deleting it and it was fine otherwise ignore what I said.</edit>

Thanks for the advice. I tried to uninstall it but is says that I have to be logged into Norton as the administrator. But I can't login to Norton because it doesn't even load/display properly......hhhmmmm.
