Just got one of these drives but can't get it installed. Followed instructions as per manual, installed software and connected cables etc, but nothing happens. It is supposed to be recognised automatically and show up along with other hard drives (I haev 2) but there is no trace. I've tried everything but nothing I do will make it show up?

Same problems here: http://forum.osnn.net/showthread.php?t=47714 but nothjing there works either!

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

What OS are you using? Are you connecting Via Firewire or USB? I have a 250 Gig version, I never bothered installing the One touch Software. I just stuck it in and let Xp do the install. I'd advise uninstalling the Software, connecting the drive and see does it pick up on the attached drive. You can install the software afterwards.

I did the same as Lump, no need for the extra bloatware...

Well the one touch software is good if you need to backup you main drive regularly, which I doubt, assuming you're installing this on a home PC. When it comes to hardware, I just get the damn thing working, then worry about any bells and whistles

Aye, I start from the gound up and add in stuff as I need it.Still haven't found the need to install the one touch software. ;)

Tell me about it, I just ghost my system every so often and store it on a cd. Why waste harddrive space for a main drive backup. Good Idea for servers and business computers, and easy. One press and it goes to work.

Got Partition Magic? If not, open "Computer Management" (assuming 2K for the moment) and click "Disk Management". It should be listed there but you can't format it there as far as I know. If it's not listed there then ignore the below. Otherwise read. :p

Open it and see if the drive is there. If it is it just needs a format. That's the best guess I have for the moment. I've had to do that with all the hard drives I've sold lately (in caddies I mean - though they were normal 3.5" drives but it's possible the same applies).

Thanks guys, I'm using XP and its USB. I didn;t even think to let xp recognise it on its own, I'll give it a go. The drive is going to be used for Backup of the existing 2 hard drives, in case of Virus etc, and for Portable Storage.I'll give it a go, but what I suspect might happen, is I'll uninstall the software, plug it in, but nothung will happen. Wat can I do if that is the case? Where should it be appearing in Computer Managemet and Device Manager?

    Thanks.

Windows XP will pick it up if it's a USB. I've attached a pick.... It should appear with hard drives suprisingly enough. Look at this http://members.boards.ie/lump/Device.jpg

Why not get good virus protection instead of backing up? Prevention is better then cure apparently.

I use the firewire version, hence the IEEE beside it.

Thanks John, I'll give it a try. I've put the latest free AVG on there so that should be a help, will put a firewall on too, not sure which one...

After many many hours of trying to get it to work unsuccessfully, I eventually work out that the drive itself was in fact faulty. Got another once, XP installed it in seconds as you said. Only problem is that on one computer I got a message saying that it is unable to operate at 'High Speed' (USB 2) unless I get a new controller or something. Does this mean that the PC only has USB 1.1, or can I upgrade some drivers to make it USB 2? If so, any idea how?
    Cheers

if its a new computer it should have USB2. Have a look in the device manager to see. You'll need to buy a new card, get it from komplett on the cheap.
