error with installed Catalyst drivers

Hi All, decided to do an update last night on my graphics card (a generic x800 xt pe) so I downloaded the Display Driver,Control Panel,WDM Capture driver catalyst component from the ati site. Only took the first one listed of the 2, i.e size is 22.8mb. Once downloaded I installed it, seemed fine, asked me to reboot which I did. However, noticed immediately on reboot that the redraw on the screen was screwed, then I recieved a message telling me <something> failed to initialise (sorry, wrote down what it was that failed last night but forgot to mail it to work ) . Anyway, checked under my device manager, the graphics card was still recognised but that was about it. As a final test tried to start Dawn of War, instantly recieved a message telling me "failed to initialise video card". Has anyone else tried to install the catalyst components and had these problems, more to the point, with a (relatively) new top of the range card is it worth my while bothering? Like to keep up to date with drivers, but not when it kills my machine and forces me to do a restore! ;) . Also, of the 2 components listed, which if either would it be better to install, it looks like the first has a control panel and the second has the CATALYST Control Center, is this any good?
    Any suggestions appreciated as always.

    Did you uninstall old ones?

Sometimes they wont use an old file in the new drivers but by not uninstalling them its still there causing what happened to you.

I sually get latest drivers if theres a fix for somfin i need ie game but more often than not stick with what works.
Btw new cats are crap i lost 20 fps in HL2 went from 65 in HArdocp benchmark to 45 on maximum settings.

    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/cat-uninstaller.exe

run that, reboot and then install the new drivers.

it could also be that you grabbed the version of the drivers that requitre dotnet to be installed, and you dont have that...

Cheers mate, might try that tonight, however going from what kdjac says might leave it for a bit until they get the drivers sorted out ;)

sorry kdjac, this is what I was refering to, don't fancy installing the new cats if it results in loss of framerates. Runs quite well at the moment, just thought there maybe a few enhancements in the new CCC that would make it worth installing?

BTW on HL2 have you noticed sometimes that the weapon you're currently using flickers as you pan from side to side, and that if you stop mid flicker it may disappear and all you can see are the good doctors hands holding empty space? I'd be interested to know if you've experienced it and how you stopped it happening if you did? Not a game stopper by any means but can get a bit annoying if it happens in the middle of a firefight, doesn't stop firing, but loses a little realism when you've got gun shots coming out of nowhere!
One reason I thought of getting new drivers, but maybe that's an in game bug?

For future reference, you may want to try Driver Cleaner from www.driverheaven.com when removing any catalyst. I think you should have downloaded the second of the 2. The second one gives you everything thats on the first one but with CCC as well. Cant say much apart from that as I dont use ATI's Cats, prefer Omega's version of it :)
