Strange Clicking - Really Annoying

My linux server is sitting here beside me, and it's making a dull clicking sound every few seconds.
When it does, it makes about 2/3 of them in succession, then stops for a seemingly random amount of time and it's driving me insane :)

Anyone else know anything about this strange problem?

Could be anything from a failing fan to a failing HDD...

Are there any CD's in the the drives, i remember the original playstation sometimes used to click when it couldnt read the CD properly.

Either that or the HD is failing

That's what I first thought, but it makes the exact same sound on shutdown.
It's like that dull clicky sound you hear when a pc is shutdown, i really can't explain it any clearer :/

It's very possible that it's the drive though.
    Thanks

That definitely sounds like a HDD on it's way out.

Listening to it now, it really does sound like an actual switch ... like a light switch. Not at all like a failing HDD

get the drive manufacturers utilities and run a test - not much else in a pc other than fan/psu/cd drives that click

as was said before it sounds like a failing fan or hard drive.

a failing hard drive can sound like switch going on or off.

You need to run hardware diagnostics on the system.

Yup I know it was said before :p

I've just restarted the box, and it's taking a bloody age to even finish the boot, all the while it's clicking like hell. Aw crap :(
