Bus no. changed

The other day I went grocery shopping in the city centre and had a heavy rucksack full of tins and stuff and a couple more bags. I have problems with my shoulders/back and was starting to ache before I even left the shop. Went to Fleet Street to get the 14A which goes almost right past my house. Had to wait about 20 mins but I thought it was better than getting another bus which would mean a 20 minute walk. A 14A eventually pulled up, I paid and got on, then I heard people around me saying the driver had changed the sign to a 14. I went to check and he confirmed it. I was really p*ssed off but basically there was nothing I could do as he couldn't give me a refund and I had no more change left for another bus. So I had to stay on, and do the 20 min walk with the heavy bags.

What rights do I have in this situation? Surely the driver can't change the destination once passengers have boarded and paid? It's like fraud. If it did happen, aren't I at least entitled to something which would enable me to get another bus without having to pay twice? It's not like I got on the wrong bus by mistake.

god i hate the bus. I've gotten transfers from bus drivers before that you just show to the other bus driver and they let you on. So you should have at least got that. I doubt a bus driver can just change the number like that, you're right, its like fraud

That happened to my friend - he got on a 77a I think it was. Before paying, he asked did it go towards some arbitrary location I can't remember now, the Bus-Driver said, "no, the 77a goes there"

Then my friend went "but this is a 77a", and the reply was, "no, its a 77"

So my friend argued for a few seconds, then went outside to check if it really was a 77a or a 77. The driver proceeded to change the number while my friend was going out the door. He argued with the driver about how he just changed it, and walked off then.

Anyways, a 77a (a real one this time) arrived a few minutes later.

Has happened to me before with 33s and 33As. It's particularly bad when you're in an early morning coma and don't notice you travelling the wrong way for a few minutes.
