    Hi everyone,

Hoping to build a new PC in the next two weeks but haven't fully decided on certain components, any advice would be much appreciated.

Here's what I came up with so far:

    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester)
    Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
    Geforce 6600GT *
    200GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA
    Plextor PX-712SA
    Tagan TG480-U01 (Psu) *
    1 GB Memory *
    17" TFT *
    Case *
    Cooling *

Any recommendations on the "*" components?

    Thanks in advance.

    Leadtek 6600GT (rated the best 6600gt) - 185 euro
Thermaltake Purepower Butterfly 480W (nice for the price) - 89 euro
    Cooler Master Cavalier 3 - 69 euro
    Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO

Eh - general jist of it. Case PSU and Ram down to you i guess

Used this Tagan power supply in my recent first build. It seems fine - it's certainly got all the latest connections (PCI express, SATA, ATX 24 pin). Only thing is that (as with most PSUs) there are a *lot* of wires left hanging around that you don't use, cluttering up the case. I would have preferred to get the Thermaltake PSU that the previous poster mentioned but it was out of stock at the time. That PSU has modular connections - i.e. you only connect what you use.

Yes I got a Tagan (480w) and can verify that it is quality all the way, and very very quite, definitely recommended, Good Choice.:D

1GB of OCZ RAM would be nice aswell.

Going to throw in a vote for the Antec Sonata for the case. It rules :). The supplied power supply should do nicely as well. Think it might be out of stock on komplett at the moment though...

Gotta second the Sonata case - beautiful paint finish - fantastically engineered - interior well thought out - all drive bays are quick release - and almost silent when running. Excellent PSU too it may only be 350 Watts but its a 'good' 350 watts.

Komplett seem to be permanently out of stock of it - I dont know why they bother listing it. Elara were also out of stock when I was looking for one.

Infact the only place I found it instock was overclockers.co.uk case delivery to ireland might be a bit pricey though....

[edit] can recommend that motherboard too - make sure you get the wireless edition - it can behave as an access point for internet connection sharing if you wish.

It doesn't have modular connections but it's a pretty good psu. Not great for heavy overclocking in my case but a good psu none the less.

I'd say get a western digital or hitachi instead of the seagate. They both perform better than the seagates depending on the model.

Yea the sonata is excellent, very quiet and the PSU can handle most high end systems without a problem (its actually 380w PSU).

The problem is it doesent come with SATA / PCI-E or newer power connections, and also doesent have the handy feature of only using the cables you actually need (like the Antec Neo etc).

On the hard drive end of things, how important is noise? If your going for a silent system then the hard drive can be a majour annoyance. Seagate/Samsung are the quietest drives, with Hitachi and WD being the best performance ones.
The new Maxtor 250gb 16mb cache drives are actually one of the best performers of late, with moderate noise level...... check out www.storagereview.com for the best H.D reviews.

Will probably stick with the Tagan as I'll be upgrading to a faster processor and GFX card in a few months time. May even make use of SLI!

    Any thoughts on TFT's?

ya make sure the responce time is 16 ms or lower
and try to read reviews about it online first

It definately comes with SATA power connections Loki. At least the one I built just before Xmas did. Think it might have had a PCI-E connector although I wouldnt recognise one of them if it bit me on the arse.

Bugger they updated it so, i had to buy the adapters!! (im looking at it now actually just to make sure and mine didnt come with any SATA power connectors - would have felt silly if it did). On the PCI-E thing, i think most cards would come with the adapter even if the PSU didnt have the connector.
So the sonata does look pretty damm good still.

One advantage of the tagan is it comes with the adapters for 20-24pin (for the intel S775/Xeon) and also the 8pin adapter, so it can be used in pretty much all the systems. And its also very quiet.....

Just fitting a Q-Technology Ultra Quiet 400W PSU with 120mm fan in my HTPC will report on its quietness (or lack of) in a day or so....

if you have an extra few bucks, get the karmon hardon sourround sticks.
    well worth it.
i got them there the other day, and i love them to bits.

    My 2c worth.

I build my Pc in a Thermaltake Xaser III case.
Absolutely WAY too big but it still turns heads!

It doesn't come with a PSU so you ahve a bit of choice. Still, I've seen two mates build into the Sonata - cracking bit of engineering. Would consider it stongly for next build. Can vouch for the SATA connectors.

Maxtor Diamond 250GB/16MB drive is the dogs! Get 3 :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 345 ✭✭padraigf

Yeah get a Maxtor Diamondmax hardrive. Wouldnt touch WD harddrives with a 40 foot pole. Last PC had 2 x 80 gig WD SATA drives and they were some of the loudest drives (new) drives ive ever heard. Have to strain to hear my 2x160 Maxtors in RAID 0 as long as the drive is defragged

Have maxtors improved that much? My 120Giggers are noisey buggers - compared to my virtually silent Samsung Spinpoint.
