Apartment satellite : Free to air possible ?

    Hi,
I live in an apartment complex which has a shared satellite service. There is one satellite on the roof which feeds into a socket in each apartment. If you want to get access to this you need to subscribe to a sky package. Sky send a card to the local installer who then installs a satellite receiver.

I don't want the yearly subscription sky package. As far as I know Sky uses one of the astra satellites. I tried plugging in a satellite receiver from a friend who has a digital satellite receiver with free to air channels but didn't get any picture. Am I incorrect in thinking both sky and the free to air channels are on the same satellite ( either astra 1 or astra 2 ) and should it be possible to get free to air channels using my own box ? Thanks in advance.

I checked the receiver that works in the other house and it gets tons of Free UK channels (BBC etc..) on astra 2. Is sky digital also on Astra 2 ?

Short answer is yes. How you fix your problem I don't know (I've no experience of communal dishes).

I got my friends satellite receiver working here. Itv news, lots of shopping channels, all the bbcs etc on astra 2. Next question : How much does one of these digital receivers cost (no card needed in this receiver, not even a cam slot,) and does anyone have some recommendations ? Thanks in advance.

You can check the sticky thread: "A list of Satellite shops both online and bricks and mortar".

You have quite a bunch to choose from. I got mine from Lidl for about 70 EUR, I think.

For Astra 2, there is an arguement that a Sky Digibox is the best one to get, as you get the full 7 day Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) for the channels. You could also get a UK FTV (Free to View) card for ITV1&2 (for the moment anyway), CH4 and five - either through a company or through a friend in the UK.

Plenty of threads on FTV Cards, and there's a list of suppliers for new FTA and Digiboxs at the top. You could also get a Digibox on ebay, buy and sell etc.

I've got a fair bit of gear off Satellite.ie, and have no complaints about the service or delivery timescale.
