Throwing it all away

Playing a game in a pub last night with a few friends. Eight of us is total with three of us with a fair bit of experience and the other five totally new to holdem (but good draw poker players). Now the only strategy I had was not to bluff or try any fancy moves because I thought players new to holdem would call with any ace or pair (after the flop). Bit like the BL. Anyway first hand I double up with AK when the flop comes K high and one of the new players calls me all the way with A high. All going well.

Very next hand I am on the BB and SB nearly throws away his cards before realising he is SB and then calls. We are the only two left. Flop comes Axx. I have 103o and hit none of it. He checks, I put in a nice bet to try and take it. He calls. Turn no good, he checks again and I put him all in. He calls with J 10 (no pair) and wins when a 10 hits the river. Now I don't blame him for calling as he was new to the game but I was livid with myself for trying a bluff when this was the only strategy I wanted to avoid.

This kind of thing happens to me a lot ,brain says check and right hand throws piles of chips into the pot. I know bluffing is a major part of holdem but how do you keep yourself disciplined when you need to ? Any tips ?

If he had folded when you put him all in on the turn, you would have thought you were the best player ever! Who needs cards?!

You're dead right, it was probably just cockiness. Poker is a great man to bring you back down to earth.
