I get quite bad period pains and I was wondering if anyone has tried any natural remedys for this? I have been to a doctor and I've been prescribed the Pill and Ponstaine (mega pain killer) but at best that combo only gets them to stop for a little while.

I'd like to try a natural remedy too, see if that would help a bit. I've tried the heaps of green veggies but that had no effect. Has anyone tried evening primrose oil? how does that work?

I look forward to your suggestions.

Evening primrose oil is very good but it made my skin very oily and broke out in spots :(
You could also try cutting down on your salt and caffine intake.

To sum up all the other threads on this I will state there is a cure it just lasts 9 months though and has side-effects. Can't remember where to find a link to them to be quite honest - they weren't as unhelpful as that btw! Someone know where to find them?

thanks for the info Kermette. I'm not a big coffee or coke drinker but maybe I should cut back on my tea drinking? Salt is harder to cut out as it seems to be in everything now.

elvisvonchiaing: I know all about that solution but I'm going to hold of on it for a few more years yet...it's my last resort.

actually IIRC it lasts longer if you continue to breast feed. Lactation and hormone production and all that.

I know this will be impossible but you could try doing something to divert / distract your attention from the pain, if you lie down and do nothing then you will feel it all.

God I know i'll regret this, but "this is my last resort to sort pms are the words every man wants to here" I sympathise is the similar manner of all men responding which is (thank christ another reason not to be a chick) this is an odd one though my current girlfriend gets great relieft from me lying my hand on her stomach, just above the pelvis and applying gentle pressure. Sounds daft, but the effect is amazing.

raspberry leaf tea or tablets they are advailible in most health food shop make sure it is raspberry leaf. or rose hip tea.

and do keep track of when and how bad they are keep a diary just in case it is more then just pms for ther are things that give simular sympthoms but more sever that are a lot owrse then simple pms and dont let the gp put you off if you feel the need to be seen by a Gynie.

I would just offer this word of advice - I was hospitalized (some years ago when I depended on alternative medicine) just go with someone who has a track record when it come to alternative medicine! Don't simply rely on someone behind counter in boots -advice of practicioner with track record is what is needed imho!

boot will just scan it and make you pay for it a good health food shop will talk to you about your purchace and answer questions.
there are no health risk siwth rose hip tea and the only time you cant take the raspberry lef if if you are in the first trimester of pregancy

Believe me there is no shame in admitting this now - just in the 1990's where I'm from really! 'Course I'm not alone!

The bellyrub thing definitely helps me, but when he's not here to rub my belly, chocolate shakes help me a lot. Exercise is said to help some people as well, I know I feel better those days that I'm up and around more during PMS, than when I'm home not doing much of anything.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 336 ✭✭Miles

Yea, I get pressed for bellyrubs and backrubs as well.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,182 ✭✭✭Tiriel

hmm bellyrubs and sympathy.. always helps anyway! if he's not around then the couch.. a duvet.. hot water bottle.. chocolate and lots of tea.. as for actual drugs all I ever take is a panadol or two.. used to take ponstain but gave it up after I went on the pill.. pain was a lot less then

If you've been prescribed the pill and ponstan and they still don't work, go get a second opinion.

Sorry, I'm going to go way off topic here...but why do some guys have this extreme problem listening to anything to do with periods? My housemate, as soon as he hears anything on the TV about it goes "OH GOD NO!!" and does his best to avoid the programme until they've finished talking about it? Is it some lame macho thing?

theres more caffene in tea than in coffee weird eh!
anyway hello sister. i suffer badly with this sort of thing even as far as vomiting from the pain.its only since i had my daughter 4 years ago. now i use a combo of the pill, evening primrose capsules, b6 and feminex or Ponstaine. evening primrose is really good but i did have to drink as much water as possible to prevent and build up of oil. salt, tea, coffee and energy drinks got cut out too. so i'm not too sure which one is the best but my combo seems to work for me.

oh just one other thing there are some essential oil rubs you can make up yourself, wow is all i have to say.

a comment to who ever said get pregnant, yes your periods stop but you can still get the same symtoms day in day out for the duration. i was personaly in bits last time.

eatting berrys is also great. cherrys are a good one.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 5,555 ✭✭✭tSubh Dearg

Thank you all for the helpful info. I think I may the teas a try.
I've always liked berries so now I have an excuse to buy loads of cherries and strawberries and things :)

I am a big fan of the belly rubs (and back rubs) but unfortunately they're not always available.

As for doing something else to take your mind off the pain...well when you're trying to get to sleep at night that's a little hard...even with the hot water bottle. I have found that going for a walk helps a bit but again I can't just get up out of my lecture and vanish off for a walk.

I'll really make an attempt to cut down on tea but that's going to be hard...it's so lovely.

    Thanks again to everyone :)

I used to think that but then I checked up on it and it isn't true. Theres about half the amount if not a third of what is in coffee.

Do get checked for fibroids. Rare in a young woman, but not implausible and was the cause of similar problems in someone very close to me.

Thanks for the concern, my doctor has already mentioned the possibility to me and I probably will get an internal exam if they haven't eased up in the next 12 mths or so.

just what my doctor said to me... sorry if its incorrect.

Sleepy's actually right you know - I understand you might not be in the mood but the contractions of an orgasm often relieve severe period pain.

Heat is a good soother. You can buy little beanbags that you pop in the microwave and hold heat for quite a while, and just leave it resting on your abdomen.

Also learn a few stretches (check out some yoga sites) and I've found that a little shiatsu massage (which you can do on yourself - it's basically working your pressure points on face, neck, feet etc.) increases a feeling of well-being (apparently your blood flow increases).

Plus misery likes company. I live with a close friend and our cycles now run together (isn't that a bizarre phenomenon?). Have fun doing girly things together with a suffering friend at that time of the month.

What's the world coming to eh?

Next thing you know I'll be agreeing with something TheCorinthian says.

    Actually...nah. That's too far fetched. :p
