CPU Burned out?

Right so wake up this morning to find out my da's bought a new Harddrive for the computer, but during the proccess of fitting it he had the PC powered on without the heatsink or fan on the chip! Theres a crappy smell in the room now and the thing wont turn on. Ok so any ejiit would prolly just guess that its definetly the chip thats blown, but im just hanging onto a sliver of hope that its something less expensive and awkward to find since its kinda oldish so ill prolly have to order it off the net :/

The chip I believe was an AMD 1500XP
and the Motherboard an A-bit Kg7a i think (its been quite a while since i bought it)

The thing is, I was hoping for my bios to tell me that it was blown by a series of beeps but it wont make a sound, the pc turns on no visual or sound but it requires me to hold the power button for 5sec to turn it off.

    Is there any hope?

id say uv defintely blown ur cpu! why had you no heatsink or fan on the cpu while fitting the new HDD?

take it out an inspect it. Chances are you'll see scorch damage but even if you dont its a way above avg chance that its gone.

To ask the same as galwaydude..why?

I have no idea why he had it on without the fan was in bed at the time :)

Also, http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/sempron_cpu_support.php abit dont seem to list the KG7-Lite as able to support sempron cpus? Im not sure because it says K range, and mine is a K range but the G7 part aint there :)

Also whats the Sempron chip like? Havent kept updated with this stuff in ages so im not sure if its like the new Thunderbird or new Duron (cut down version).
Regardless im sure its more than my motherboard is capable.

he shouldnt have had it plugged in full stop.

If it will take a semperon then buy one (they are, fot the most part, the old xp processors just renamed to look cheap).

I've smelled that smell a few times myself. Chip is roadkill.

It's easy to forget the heatsink, especially when it's in the way of fitting the HD,

Exactly... opening an appliance thats still on... well i don't know what to say. I hope your Dad has life assurance...

In other news you may have a big windfall in the near future if your dad continues that sort of stuff.

    LOL!!
You better hope his Dad lives a long and happy life or its guilt and remorse for you ....

erm, if the cpu is burnt there could be problems with the mobo receiving damage as well. Simply replacing the chip may just pour more money down the drain. (incse thats what your doing)

I had a 1Ghz AMD that had the fan fail one day. The CPU stopped working and was all brown and scorched. But after it cooled down it worked fine for ages afterwards. But I think that was unusual. I killed another 1.3ghz AMD somehow, I think the HS wasn't making full contact. But that on was scorched and never worked again.

You better hope that when you fried your Processor that you didn't Feck up the Motherboard as well.

    What the hell?

What makes you think he had it plugged in when he was working on it?

Apperntly he needed to remove the fan to put the Harddrive in the tray and just forgot to put it back on when he closed to case.

Now **** off my thread and thanks for nothing you sick freak.

Stop guessing if you don't know. I've seen tests run on intel and amd chips where they purposely left off the heatsinks to see how long they'd take to fry, and the boards etc were fine afterwards. If it is the cpu burned out, then it shouldn't have affected anything else. I have a amd athlon 1800+ left over from an upgrade if you want a second hand cpu.

    Mark

Tomshardware.com did some tests, quite interesting how quickly a processor will fail once the heatsink is taken away.Link here

Smart. Like Father, like Son, Eh?

Electricity kills thousands of ppl every year... it's a fact of life. I'm suggesting your dad doesn't do that again. A dose of reality to u. Relax.

There's a very real chance the the fried CPU (and yes it's definitely fried if you could smell it) damaged the motherboard aswell. You'll be taking a chance by trying a good CPU in that board as it also has a chance of being damaged by the faulty motherboard.

If you can get a cheap old Athlon 1G or something similar, maybe even an old Duron, to test in it that would be worth while. I wouldn't go putting a brand new Sempron or XP in it though just yet.
