I was thinking that coupled with that wireless signal sender job might be handy. If i lay any more cable around the house my fiance will kill me! :D

Looks excatly the same as the Aver TV one that I got in maplins last year for 45 euro (even the remote looks the same) ...if it is its not a bad little card at all..

One I got was only mono IF this is stereo then a real bargain.

I just popped into the local store to get one of these cards, there were none :(
But I just checked the link again, and the offer doesn't start until 13th Jan.
    Nice one!

FFS, I just paid €85 for a Skystar 2. Someone please tell me the Skystar 2's are better for some reason or another. :(

The skystar 2 is a satellite card

I just read the description and it sounds the exact same as the Skystar 2. Anyway, you'd know I'm not well up on these things. :)

it's not the same thing, anyway what are the connections on the aldi card ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Dr. Dre

The skystar is a digital card (DVB). Mind you, €85 seems a bit steep for that card.

Well if you had any recordings on video tape, you could use this card to get them on to your PC in mpeg (or whatever) format. e.g. allowing you to create a VCD/DVD* of that particular recording after you've edited it within a video editing package.

*Obviously this does not mean DVD quality, just that you could burn it onto one.

    What model is the card?
    Hardware encoding capabilities?
    Linux support?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 634 ✭✭✭AB03

Says it'll record to mpeg4 which means divx/xvid.
Sounds good, dunno how capable it'd be tho. Gonna pick one up if I can get to a lidl in time.

    Check it out:

    http://homepage.eircom.net/~anderson2002/misc/f1_tv.jpg

I used my video card during F1 races last year, also when watching the Footy. Its great to have live tv beside live info imo

I have a Tv near my pc aswell but this saves electricity, not much but its a good excuse to get the card. Its also great for recording programs from the tv and then putting clips on the net, for instance... Red Dwarf Clip

I'm not sure but will this card take Coax? Basic Ntl cable?

    Model?

Hardware encoding capabilities? - see website, MPEG 1,2,4

Linux support? - looks like a BTC based card, if it is then it will work nicely.

Might be a stupid question but...

Would you be able to use the card to play a PS2 on the computer monitor?

I assume you'd need an RF cable or something?

I got one of these when de had them last year....easy 2 install and never had a problem with it. Good piece of equipment.

It just creates an mpeg stream. Of course you can share it across a network.

The real advantage of a card like this would be to turn your PC into a PVR, like a tivo, replaytv or sky+. Pause, rewind live TV, record whole series of a show etc.

Check out http://www.mythtv.org/ for some good PVR software. XMLTV has all the UK channels, all its missing is the RTEs and TV3.

Having no knowledge on this, do you need an external aerial to tune in card - if so, I expect it tunes in just local TV, or is there an internal tuner?
what's anyone's exp of using this?

Even portable TV's need an aerial plugged in - weather it's NTL or the one on the back of the TV.
    It's a tuner on a card.
It will pick up the same channels as a TV or Video using the same Aerial.

I think this is the card from the Orgional Manufacturer . The specs look a bit high for a tv card i might be pushing it with a P3 1000 mhz

Any one know what Aldi are like for stocking these things, I know lidl only ever get about 20 to 30 of such items and you have to be in there early.
Are there any other Dublin branches apart from the one in parnell street and Finglas?

    SyxPak,
If you edit your XMLTV .conf file manually you can enter RTE 1 2, TV3 and even TG4! and get the info from the uk_rt grabber. Even has listings of actors etc for movies....
I have done it if you want a copy PM me or I'll post it somewhere.
Maybe we can get a few folk together to make NTL, Chorus and SKY Ireland packages

Parnell St. are sold out of the TV card and the Hard drive, not sure about the DVD writer, I didn't see any on display.

I was there at 11:45, they must only get a couple of each in.

You should ask a member of staff. I couldn't see them either. Signs were up with the price but I couldn't see them. I asked a member of staff and they said they were behind the checkouts. I cued up empty handed, asked, the guy bent down and retrieved one from down by his feet.

You'd think they'd put a sign up or something.

leadtek winfast xp expert card is similar price but better. Gives fm radio, best quality stereo telly, remote control, decent video editing software. Google for reviews to see more. Can record from cassette tape, videos, radio, anything really with it. available from overclockers.co.uk who are good to deal with. i found it tricky to configure but I think i posted the correct configuration on these forums when I did get it working so don;t worry about that. cost60 euro including postage I think. can connect ps2 to it yes.

Got one this morning , didnt get a chance to install it until around 10 tonight . Its easy to install but a bit difficult to setup the tv and fm channels . I got Ntl analogue cable so i had to goto Ntl's website to get the exact frequencies .The lack of direct frequency input is a bit disappointing until you work out how awkard it is . Im already looking for new software .

The quality is pretty good for a entry card and the resources its needs is minimal .Im on P3 1000mhz 256 mb memory and its not affacting performance at all . Overall for Quality , Features and Price id give it a 8 out of 10 . Bargin at 40 euro .

    Box Contents:
    Analogue Tv & Fm tuner
    Remote Control
    Fm Radio Aerial
Line out - Line in Audio cable (RAC/Stereo?)
