I'm looking for a HTML editor to run on Linux. I'm not quite hardcore enough yet to go with vi/vim or emacs, so I'm looking at Bluefish, Nvu, and Screem so far.

Anyone used any of these? Other recommendations?

    I use Quanta myself.

Haven't tried many others, but haven't felt the need to either. Quanta's got all I need.

I normally use vim or kate, but yesterday I tried using bluefish. Its good for html, and has nice sftp support, but I can't use it until they fix the perl syntax highlighting, as its borked. ( most of my work is perl ). It seems to have a lot of features for generating html and css, which I haven't tried yet. Try kate as well and see what you think.

I'm rather fond of JEdit - needs Java. Got used to it when I was a Windows weenie, and still use it - mostly for PHP - on Linux.

you can't come onto a unix board and expect to get away with saying
I'm not quite hardcore enough yet to go with vi/vim or emacs

For CSS, you'll find it hard to beat firefox with the webdevelopers extension bar.
It allows you open a stylesheet in the sidebar and edit it live.
It has rudimentary save and load, but you'll wanta copy of vim open to copy
and paste for more complex changes.

Hmm, just had a thought. There's an extension somewhere that allows you use the editor
of your choice for textbox entry. Wonder if it works here? I'll be back...

Good suggestions all - thanks folks.

nadir - I figured that remark would get a reaction from someone - just acknowledging my current level of skill/comfort/whatever....

Don't worry - I'll get into vim one of these days.........

Linux format did a round-up of web editors couple of months back, and besides going down the wine + dreamweaver path, they gave quanta the thumbs up. The project is also in the process of having a new addition in the form of a preview window (already there, just not fully featured yet) which should make it stand head and shoulders above the other (free) competition.
