[Request] Good value computer desk

I'm looking to buy a computer desk for home, not one of your bog standard wheely things, but a large wide one where I do some music recording with a keyboard, fit a few bits and bobs on the side, has a few drawers etc etc. I saw something like this in Atlantic Homecare in Liffey Valley recently but it was almost 300 smackers. Anyone know of something like this but a good bit cheaper?

    Thanks in advance
    Ardent

Atlantic is the only place - 139euro for a 150 x 80cm long desk - Its big enough to take my 3 17inch monitors & i still have plenty or room for my keyboard/books. No drawers though!

I searched for ages and it was the only place with anything even half decent

    go to www.ikea.co.uk
    look under computer desks.
check how cheap they are and then either get a flight over (Ryanair day trip approx 40 euro including tax) and have it shipped back (along with everyelse you buy!) or get somebody to bring it back in a car.

    I bought 2 of these:

    Argos cat no. 617/9179

And nailed 'em together. The desks themselves are good, but quite small, which is why I got 2 of them.

Did you nail them end to end or one behind the other? They don't look deep enough to hold a monitor and keyboard!

Actually, the drawers is not that really important. I'll go back in a few weeks to AH, maybe I paid a visit to them at a bad time...

Ardent, contact www.costcutter.ie (run from Mallow, but with outlets all over the country). I got a brilliant workstation from them for €50 back before Christmas, but I'd say the offer runs until end January, or whenever stocks run out...

Dead sturdy (metal frame on castors), nice beech finish, 3'-wide desktop, loads of handy storage space — overhead shelf for printer, pull-out drawer under the pull-out keyboard shelf, built-in CD rack on the side...

Sorry I've lost the picture, but if you email them they'll send you one.

Brilliant value; nearest thing I've seen elsewhere was over €140... :D

Yeah, I got a desk the same as Peckerhead from Costcutter. At €50, it's an absolute steal. It's very well built and I recommend it. Maybe buy 2 of them and have them side by side, and it's still only 100eur! ;)

End to end. They measure bout a foot and half deep, so true, if you have a standard monitor, you may have to do some messing around. Luckily, I have 2 flat-panels, so they work fine.

Ardent, if you're anything like me, then you've looked at all the crap that's on sale in Atlantic etc that is either far too expensive or, worse, completely unsuited to prolonged computer use - like one of those uber-nasty desks on wheels with the most useless of all inventions, the pull-out keyboard drawer.

I spent the guts of two months looking for the perfect computer desk. I didn't find it, but the closest I came was at Brereton's Office Supplies up on either Parnell or Mountjoy Square.

They sell second hand office furniture and I got this large and totally groovy 70s style desk - I felt like Reggie Perrin sitting behind it - and a proper office chair for, I think, about 130 euros for both. I've attached an image of it in my old gaff to give you an idea of what I'm talking about

It had loads of space to the right of the keyboard and monitor (though, the photo doesn't do it justice) and it was a joy to use.

Disassembled in the garage at the moment but, if this is the kind of thing you're looking for, give them a shout. They've got a lot of good stuff worth checking out.

I bought two of these and turned a spare bedroom into a computer room/office

    http://www.buy4now.ie/atlantic/productdetails.asp?calledby=P&productid=662229

they are €119 each from atlantic homecare also this price is just for the desk the filling / drawer cabnet is extra.

but a cool desk it fits computer monitor printer scanner phone tv and mini fridge on it without a prob also made out of good stuff and very strong.

Bad point is its flat pack - my hate of flat pack furniture grows ever stronger with each passing day

What's the depth of the desk like? Is there room to put a midi tower case anywhere? Also, I see it has wheels, does it move much?

nope it dosnt have wheels - its the filling cabnet drawer thing that has wheels and thats extra.

the measurements are stated on the website

Hmm, that one is rubbish in comparison to the Costcutter offer.

Yeah, the Costcutter one is a steal... :D My kids have been 'bench-testing' it — read jumping up and down on it! — since Christmas and no sign of the keyboard shelf coming away (which is what I feared).

I rang the place I bought mine in (in Killaloe, 20 mins from Limerick) and they still have a few left. I think the offer was valid to 31st January, subject to stock availability..?

Are there any Costcutter stores in Dublin that are selling these desks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 710 ✭✭✭fuse

Cool, this thread is a great help.
I think I'll go on Thursday and pick up the LIDL one, gonna email costcutter now also and see if i can get a pic of the desk...

Only email address they give is info@barrys.ie which got returned to me.
I'll have a look in the costcutters in Whitehall/Collins ave in Dublin and see if they're doing the offer.

Anyone got any pics of it?
