I decided there before Christmas I was going to build myself a new pc and I set about buying parts nearly all of them from komplett.

Well I got way laid over the crimbo, and I was lookin for some advice finsihing this thing at the moment I have the following:

    CPU: AMD 64 3000+ 2.0 512KB cache

Board: MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition S754nForce3 250GB

    Memory: TwinMOS PC3200 512MB

    Disk: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB SATA 8MB Cache 7200RPM

Media Devices: LiteOn - Dual Layer Dvd Recorder
    Sony - Floppy Drive

Case: Antec Sonata - Piano Black.

I have some fans and stuff aswell.

Id be using this machine for playing games, editing photos, music all the usual and for entertainment and I have a pretty good widescreen I would connect it to for some stuff.

At this stage I need a graphics card and a monitor of some kind.

I nearly pressed the next button with my credit card on overclockers just now for:

    AOpen GeForce 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) & DOOM 3 Bundle - Retail (GX-001-AO)

    That was 300 Sterling.

Do I need to spend this kinda money to play games and be confident for a year that my graphics card wll have the spec for the majority of new games.

I badly need a screen of some kind a 19" CRT or a 17" TFT I think, what kinda screens/displays are you people using and how much did they cost you?

Anybody who has done a new build lately what did you use?

I've got a radeon 9800 Pro and that will be future proof enough and prob half the price of the 6800
As far as a monitor goes a 16ms responce time is a must if you are getting a tft. Overclockers are listing a tft with a 8ms responce time
Make sure to add in an extra 120mm fan to the front of the Sonata The hard drives run very hot with out it. I have a sonata myself, if you ever figure out the front audio connectors will you pm me how they work I still can't figure them out and the manual ain't much help!

Really depends on what setting the Game is on (high/low Quality). I like to know what FPS you get with DoomIII on high Quality with the 9800pro.

I got the Samsung SM-910N 19" and am very impressed with it. nice for Games, and not bad value at ~€450.

delivery is kind of expencive from Overclockers!

you may consider adding another 512mb of RAM for overall system performance.

On the monitor front, I use a 21" trinitron CRT and love it to bits. :)

    1600x1200@85Hz

You could probably pick one up for the same price as a decent 17" tft (though I wouldn't swear by it, mine belongs to my company).

I'm using a nvidia 6600Gt (Agp) i think its as good as the 9800pro i had, from reading reviews the 6600gt is apparently better.
And i have a 19" samsung ctr monitor and like it very much, bit big but at €200 (maybe less now) you cant go far wrong.

So you guys are getting good results with these 128Mb cards for Doom 3 ???

    Because I deff wouldnt mind paying 200 - 250 for a card.

Yea a CRT makes sense to me I dont really care about how it may not look sexy on the desk. Just want affordable quality display. So I will do more investigation into the prices n stuff. .

    Thanks ppl.

    Johnny.
