    Hi,

My friend bought a house in Galway and in the contract it stated the he is not allowed to install a satellite dish, which I find strange!

I'm not very familiar with law but the european commission state that every individual is entitled to install a satellite dish.

    http://europa.eu.int/comm/internal_market/en/services/services/antenna_en.pdf

    Summary here:
    http://conventions.coe.int/Treaty/EN/Treaties/Html/153.htm

Where does my friend stand in relation to installing a dish?
Is what the european comission state an actual law and would it take precendence over the contract that he signed?

    Thanks

Unless it's an old house & it's to do with Preservation reasons & in keeping the original appearance?? Possibly install the dish where it's out of sight, i.e. behind the house?

No, it's a barnd new house only recently built. I don't know the reason that it's in the contract but I'm guessing it's to do with appearance, can't think of any other reason.

I'm not sure which direction the house is facing, must find that out.
But even so, would what the european commision state take precedence over his contract, anyone familiar with the law regarding this?

All this info comes from my own experience, I do not have any legal expertise.

The County Council has taken action against satellite dishes that ruin the aspect (i.e. visible from the street). I have a co-worker who bought a house, installed the dish, then got several letters from the Council, where they asked him to take it down and move it to the back of the house.

My guess is that the builders have had similar problems from County Council, making them start adding sat dish clauses to their sale contracts. That's probably because people have continued to install dishes on the front of the house.

Put the dish on a pole in the back garden.
    it's not on the house.

At home I've a dish about 18" off the ground - so it don't need to be obtrusive

since most dishes are offset focus you could also mount it nearly horizontal !
( anyone got linkies or pics for this ? )

How do you mean horizontal? Do you mean like a bird bath or something??
