Shutdown a pc over a network

Does anyone know how to shutdown a pc over a network? Dempsey recommended using this http://www.tightvnc.com/ but i cant get it to work! is there any other programs that i can use?

VNC is the way to go... Type VNC Download into Google, you should get the programme. I use it and control 3 Pc's from one using it.

The simplist way ever. As long as you're an admin on the pc you wanna shutdown just go to cmd and run "shutdown". A little program that most people have seen once or twice because it was exploited by the msblast virus. So all you do is run "shutdown" with a few switches such as -s to shutdown, -r to restart, -m \\computer_name to tell it which computer to shutdown etc. Or type "shutdown -i" to run a gui. Works the finest.

login as root, then type
"shutdown -h now"
you can change the "now" to be any value...
man shutdown and you'll find out how it works.

Yes. "Halt" will also work.

I cant get the shutdown -i to work. I have the Remote Shutdown Dialog window. The Computer name would be its network name, yea? Do I have to enable Remote Desktop in system or something? When i browse for the computer, "The service is currently unavailable"

You prob need to be on a domain....(I've tried this at home on a workgroup and it never works....just tried it now in work which is on a domain and it worked perfectly)

Im not familiar with domains. And I dont know put one on my network. I tried there, seems like too much effort for a small LAN

pffff... Microsoft have several versions of shutdown.exe with differing syntax's
try shutdown /? first !
also cf:
shutdown /L /R /Y /C (reskit)
shutdown /Powerdown /verify (terminal server)

you could make a batch file on the remote machine to stop services gracefully first and the shutdown and call it from a batch file on your PC using psexec


PS. if tightvnc don't work there may be network/firewall problems - which will stop anything working
