LokiTorrent, a Web site that tracks and indexes BitTorrent files, says it's setting up a legal defense fund to fight a lawsuit filed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

The site's operators have collected $36,759 in support so far, $30,000 per month needed to start defending themselves from the MPAA's lawsuit, according to a recent posting on the Web site.

The action was filed against LokiTorrent on Dec. 14. That same day, the movie industry association sent site operators a cease-and-desist order to stop them from hosting trackers that match BitTorrent users with copyrighted movies.

I was surprised at how quickly they raised that money!
It's useless though... they have no case lol. People are downloading and distributing illegal movies/tv/software/music with thanks to their site.. They can't possibly win. lol.

    Kudos though! :P

all i can say is go them!

downloading files doesnt hurt them as much as the MPAA make out they just obviously dont have anything better to do

Yeah the MPAA tend to annoy everyone these days... Put up a simple advertisement promo clip on a fansite and they demand you take it down or face legal action.. pfft

Of course illegal distribution of copyrighted material on such a large scale is something they need to deal with

The whole thing reminds me of "Home taping is killing music". Does anyone remember that BS?

Different century - same old s**t.

I should think this is a null point

BitTorrent itself is used for piracy and there's no suit there. It's also easily arguable that the companies who make DivX players are supporting the pirate film industry... yet nothing.

There's a case there, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered.

They only have to prove that their site has other valid legal uses such as distributing freeware Linux aps etc. You can do illegal things with lots of tools but the tools themselves are not illegal. The problem is that to go to court, the MMPA' will make it soooooo expensive for Lokitorrent to defend itself. But look, I though the world was ending when napster shut down but another thing came allong, Supernova are doing this Exeem thing now....all these things once popular and high profile get shut down and another tool pops up to take its place...the circle of life...sniff sniff

No, that would be on par with LokiTorrent offering a Bittorrent client...
