I would personally be opposed to that on civil liberties grounds. That and the fact that I'd be caught by the balls :(

I'd have no problem if they brought this in - its the people who take drugs would have the problem.

An employer can make it a condition of your employment that you submit to drugs testing. They can't make you take the test but they can fire you if you don't. I'm not sure if this needs to be in your contract when you join though or if they can just add it in later

It depends on whether they have a clause that states that they may amend your contract at any time and that they reserve the right to terminate it if you refuse to accept new terms and conditions.

I'd be opposed to it on civil liberties/privacy grounds even though i don't do any drugs other than alcohol. What you do in your spare time is up to you and if you come and do a *sober* day's work then it's not the business of your employer what you do on saturday nights.

you cant just put something in any contract as blanket as that. think about it, whats the point of having a contract in the first place if you have a clause saying one party can make any ammendments it likes at a later date and end the contract if the other party doesnt accept.

It's pretty common to have escape clauses in any type of contract, one party can then take the escape clause and ask for changes, i.e. a new contract. I think most employment contracts say it can be terminated by either party with a certain amount of advance notice.

yes but in employment contracts you dont have clauses saying the employer can change anything about a contract they dont like and fire you if you dont agree to it.

No, but they can sometimes tell you that they're ending your contract, then offer you a new altered one, which is close enough. In fact they'd probably phrase it your way, and if you said they can't then phrase it my way.

But did you hear about a school (in Limerick? Can't remember really) that sent out a newsletter suggesting that parents have their kids drug tested, and even gave them the name and number of a company? There are actually parents who do this to their kids. Such bull****..

When my friend changed schools and went to a boarding school in Tipparary he was tested, all theyfound was nicotine though even though he was stoned a few days earlier. He told me he just drank a load of water and he was fine.

Well, it looked like schools were going to do this for a time in 2003 - though that kind of talk seems to have died down as of late, partially just because it would cost the government, somewhere along the line, money that could be better spent elsewhere in education...
