    anyone?
Care to wait more than 30 minutes for the answer to a frankly trivial problem?

Got firewalls running on them? Probably blocking ICMP packets (i.e. ping, traceroute, etc)

Have you set a rule in each of the firewall installations to allow ICMP packets through, as per Stephens suggestion?

How do you do that? i have allowed everything in ICMP in the firewall settings for the network on the laptop and pc!

take the firewall down completly for a few minutes to see if its actually the firewall, if it is then tackle that...if not then find what is The problem..

Or you could set an ftp server or something and ftp from one t'other...or telnet or something, they dont require icmp
