right i dunno if this allowed but i have read the rules and there was nothing on backing up legal software.

i've just bought a second hand pc with came with win98 it's for the folks so they can learn the innards of day to day pc use.

the windows98 cd i got is fairly battered but still works, but i want to make a backup of it so i'll have it if the cd ever get's sratched.

how do i copy it? do i just do a cd copy in nero?

i'll delete the thread if it's not suitable.

If it is an OEM install of windows most of the files will be in C:\windows\options\cabs.

    copy these files to c:\win95
the pop in the CD and in a command prompt in windows type:
    xcopy D:\win95\*.* C:\win95\*.* /S /D
this will copy over the 5 or 6 files that are on the CD but not in the options folder.

M$ no longer offer media replacement for windows 98.

    does that work with 98?

usually if you change 95 to 98 - the idea is if the CD was unreadable to use the ones on the HDD - but only if it's a factory istall where the files are already on the hdd

I usually copy the files from the win98 on the CD to the win98 folder on the HDD - just had to many bad run ins with 95 removing cd drivers half way through the install - also means you don't need to keep using the CD since the files are already on the pc which saves wear and tear

it done that but when i autoplay the cd now in winxp and try to go to the cool movie clips and inactive cd sampler i get a please insert win98 cd into your drive.

so you can't just copy them through nero

Not sure if the win98 cd has a protection on it.but a work mate copied it last wek and although all the folders were present the cd would not autoplay.
Made a copy of it myself a while back and it worked fine.I had a proggie called anydvd (removes cd/dvd protection) running in the background and copied with nero 5.

The windows 98 CD is not protected in any way/shape/form!

Do a disk copy in nero, if that dont work, your source is already shagged.

Best bet is to get a copy of the disk from someone who has a good version.

Afaik, with windows, copies of the installer aint illegal as long as you have the code/licence key from the original for the system running it.
