Dating Single Mothers

Just had a date last night with a great woman and think it went really well, nothing's definitely going to come of this but I'm hoping that something might. Anyway, when we were out last night she told me that she has a two year old daughter. This doesn't bother me in the slightest, her little girl's Dad is still very much a part of her life and I know I'm not going to be put into a surrogate role or anything like that...

I've never dated a single mother before and I know a few of the regular posters here are single parents themselves so I'm just wondering if any of ye (or anyone who's dated a single parent before) has any tips? I understand that no matter what, her daughter will always be her first concern and priority but given that I've no experience in this before, I'm sure there's a load of potential mine-fields in this situation and a few pointers never go astray!

If you've only been on one date and don't know what if anything is going to come of it, you might be getting a bit ahead of yourself here. If you're still going out with this woman in a couple of months or whatever and she wants you to meet the kid, then you can consider it.

Until then, just hope the kid's father isn't some sort of jealously obsessive nutter.

the only advice i can give you is she could be late at times, she may have to cancel but the girl has tw years of practice as long as your happy then it should all be ok. good luck treat the two of them with respect

    no tips as such
she may have hassle getting a babysitter at times and also keep in mind that she just can't drop everything and go anywhere at a moments notice, so don't be asking her to do stuff without considering the fact that the baby exists.
other than that, just treat her like a regular g/f, nothing more will be expected from you

I think lots of relevant tips and advice could be garnered from that wonderful 'About a Boy' movie, starring the equally wonderful Hugh Grant. He had a thing for yummy mummies.

I have to admit I would find it hard to go out with a single parent. I like to take the 'path of least resistance' wherever possible and don't like complicating my life unnecessarily. That's laziness for you I suppose.

Yeah, I'm probably getting a bit ahead of myself alright but I don't usually like getting into situations I don't know much about so where I can get some advice from people that know what they're talking about I'll take it with thanks :)

Have to agree with Cajun on this one - just remember that you're gonna play second fiddle & remember that sometimes she may need not just time for herself, but time for her daughter & you'll be fine.... otherwise usual rules apply; respect, honesty etc etc.....

As a single parent who has dated in the past the best advice I can give is to be patient. Personally speaking I found it very difficult to let anyone into my daughters life until I was sure that that was "it". So it may take her a long time to let you fully into her life. With a child- even of 2 years - you cannot have a series of boyfriends dropping in and out of their lives.

Yeah, I dated a single mum about 2 years ago in college. Didn't really date as such, but went out together and hooked up on a trip abroad, stuff like that. In the end, it wasn't the kid that got in the way, but our preconcieved notions of what the relationship should be like. I wanted one thing out of it (sex, and someone to hang out with on the trip too) and she wanted another (proper boyfriend, move in, that sort of ****).
    Just. Didn't. Work.
What what the hey - give it a go anyway. The worst that could happen is it doesn't work out.

My bro went out with a girl who had a 18 month old son. That was then. Now they're married 5 years and they have another kid. Great story.
