Volume Control not working

Basically, i have a laptop, and in general Fn+ (Volume control key) works perfectly. I can mute/raise/lower the volume for normal system events, and for playing mp3's/ogg's in XMMS.

However when i play vided files in VLC the controls have no effect. Can anyone explain why? I'm using the Enlightened Sound Daemon (ESD) as my audio mixer thingy (if that helps).

Alternatively, if someone could help me get ALSA working for my 2.6.8 kernel, that'd be great :p (as either a module or built in to the kernel, i can't get either to work).

    esd was spawned by satan.

like you say alsa is the way to go, its native in the 2.6 kernel anyway, you just need to make a few configuration changes. i.e your ~/.asoundrc
and modprobe the modules if they arnt built in.
tbh follow the gentoo docs on it, they are very comprehensive.

Actually, its slightly more complicated than i origionally thought.

Basically, the volume control works when i don't use the earphone slot in my laptop. i.e. i use the built in speakers. However as soon as i connect the earphones to the lineout/earphone socket the volume control doesn't work.

    Anyone know a solution?

As for enabling ALSA, i'm fecked if i know what i'm doing wrong, but i can't get it to work whether i build it into the kernel and disable OSS completely or if i build it as a module and also disable OSS completely in the kernel.

you have to do stuff to get alsa to work, like unmute some channels and stuff.
there are loads of guides online, and since all cards are different i dont know specifcally what you need to do, so like work it out and stuff
    :p
