Dublin to Belfast by Train - rip off

Going up to Belfast for two nights later this month. Hotel is close to the train station so I thought I might "take the train" - well it looks like they are taking me for a ride all right. 48 euro per head return. That's nearly 100 euro return for both of us.

It's 100 miles to Belfast - pay the toll of 1.60 each way, parking fee while there if any, fill the car with petrol and I reckon I will still have 50 euro left - by the way you can get a decent meal for two in Belfast for 50 euro.

The train is a real rip-off alright - I used to work in Limerick and go home to Wicklow every weekend - train used to cost me about €45 per week - which I could have been using to pay off on a car!

Have you tried pricing the bus?

I know the buses are getting better expecially Bus Eireann who seem to have nice new 2004 buses on the roads, where have all the crap old buses gone?

I'd prefer not to take a bus, not enough room, no tea, no toilets - I know it's only 2 or 3 hours but still.

What makes the train more annoying is that I can get in and out of work each day on the dart for less than 12 euro a week.

Id say they just sell them off to private companies around the country or put them on the quieter routes.

Would the credit union sell Dublin/Belfast tickets?

The last time I took the Dublin/Belfast train it was only 35 euro return. Only a couple of months ago too.
