My mate is thinking of getting a NEC 3500 dvd writer for a P3 800Mhz 256MB ram. Guy in the shop told him he needs at least 1GHZ. Is this true, I know it will run at lower speeds on a slower machine but I thought that it should handle it. Don't know if he has a high speed HD.
Is anybody running this writer on a slow machine at full speed?
Is nero's speed testing to be trusted, what figure should I be looking for?

He'll definately be able to burn a disc, but don't expect to be able to decode mp3 on-the-fly and be able to burn an audio cd at 48x.

As for DVD burning, well, he should be able to burn at 4x. A friend of mine has a very similar computer, and bought a NEC 2500A, and he has no problems at 4x. 8x /might/ be a problem though. Also, i wouldn't recommend he does anything else at all when burning. His computer probably couldn't keep up.

I thought it would handle it, is the HD speed more important than the CPU?
I agree you must close all other programs

I have an old penitum 75Mhz which I burn at 24X. It is a mitsumi with a 16mb buffer which empties on average 3 times during the run. I dont know if any dvd writers have large buffers like this. i think most writers have this burn-proof technology these days so buffer emptying doesnt matter.

I can't find the minimum requirements for the 3500.

I've a PIII 933 with 256mb of RAM, and it will burn CDs and DVDs at the maximum rate with not a coaster in sight - just don't do anything during burning. If he's paranoid he can shut down any background progs too (firewall, a/v etc.). I've never burnt a DVD at greater than 4x because I've never had faster media.

did a few 8x burns on my dads pc (1.3 celeron... which isn't too far ahead of an 800mhz p3)
    no problemos there.

nice choice for a dvdrw drive btw :)

I was able to burn a DVD at 4x on a 550Mhz P3 using an NEC 2500A. Although I never got coasters, ALL PC resources were being hogged by the burner :) I never bothered trying 8x as I only had 4x discs at the time.

    Thanks everybody.
I heard from a guy with the newer 3520 writer saying he could go 8X on dvds and full speed on cds with a 500MHZ P3 256ram so I think I am safe. Best pay the few euro more incase he upgrades the pc in the future anyway.

    if anybody is interested..

3520 is €77 delivered from komplett.

3500 is €76 delivered from svp but then you dont pay extra postage for your blanks which are dirt cheap there. The 3520 is €86 on svp so it is €9 more than komplett but if you are getting 100+ blanks it may be cheaper
