linking pc's

this is probably a totally stupid question, but is there a way (or a device that enables a way) to link up 2 pcs via a USB or firewire cable rather than a ethernet network? Perhaps even if one PC was being used as an external hard drive for the other, it would be handy for transfering files from one to the other.

Basic reason is a previous problem I posted about in which my pc wont recognise the USB modem ever since I set up the ethernet network

    thanks,
    flogen

The fact that your modem isn't recognised when you set up an ethernet network means something is wrong with your setup.

Try changing the subnet mask and IP's that you use on your ethernet. Its quite possible the defaults the network sets to are the same as the ones your modem wants to set to, and so the modem loses out.

EDIT: Reading old thread to see what was tried. But if its a last resort, it is possible to get a USB network cable. It costs about EUR30-EUR50 (i think) in peats.

I use this USB cable to link my P.C. & laptop.

Pretty sweet, nothing spectacular really, but does the job. Got it in Compustore for 30 euro. I know, there gone now, but you can prolly pick up this cable in PC World or Harvey Norman or somewhere. Anywho, simple to use, load in the software, hook up the cables & your set.

    C YA
