Tottenham for Europe

Having just watched the Tottenham V Everton game I think we could be seeing Tottenham in Europe next season. They are a young team and if they can hang onto all their players they will challenge for the fourth spot at least. Some excellent performances from the young players today and if their form is consistantly that good IMO they will have an excellent chance.

Oh thanks guys just got a mental image of Harney in Football Shorts !!!!!!!!!

On the game yes Spuds looked very good alright but what happened to the Everton Defense, Stubbs out and they turn to rubbish ? They need to get some proper cover in if they want to be in a European position by the end of the season.

Nice to see Keane scoring simple tap ins as well. If he can just do that for Ireland from now on we are in good condition to qualify for the WC :D

keane got very unlucky that he hit the crossbar and his later shot bounced just over the goal when it could so easily have gone in

on a good day that would have been his hat trick :(

Praise for the Yids from a Gooner? This is a happy new year... ;)

Agree with the point re. Stubbs. I definitely believe Everton would have been a tougher task with Stubbs and Martyn playing today (not that I'd blame Wright for the 5 goals, but you'd still want to see your regular keeper marshalling your defence when you're up against an in-form team)

Marney looked very good, calm and collected throughout. What I liked best was the fact that he did the simple things well. He wasn't all tricks and flicks right from the off, but showed great maturity in taking his two goals (and what a second goal...)

Keane had one of his better days in a Spurs shirt, and today's goal was his 8th in 13 for Spurs. I didn't realise he'd been that prolific! He'll still lose his place if Defoe is fit on Tuesday, its a straight toss-up between him and Defoe to partner Kanoute methinks.

I wouldn't be thinking top 4 just yet, we're still a bit off Everton in the table with Boro and the 'Pool ahead of us. We've done well lately against the teams that we need to be beating, with only Boro and Everton being real challenges for us given current form (and we had a bit of luck against Boro with a dodgy sending-off). Our real test comes over the next two weeks, ManYoo on Tuesday and Chelsea on the 15th. Two defeats in those games and we won't be looking quite as spritely...

Still, onwards and upwards I says! Here's hoping things keep going well up to my next visit (hopefully the 4th Round FA Cup tie on the 29th, then Fulham at the end of Feb).

Its just a pity that is said too often. Good to see Spurs doing well, and Keane, some nice goals there.

Its kind of sums up why a lot of people feel that Everton wont be in the same position come May, they always have the potential to go out and get hammered when you would least expect it.

If he scored the one in the first half who's to say he would have got any more chances in the match? Everton might have won 4-3, the game might have been abandoned, Mary Harney might have been...

I am gonna refer to a recent thread I was involved in about Everton... All I can say is that I was right, a small number of injuries and they loose 2 in a row :)

As for Spurs.. They are playing some savage football but I cant help but wonder whether they can keep this type of form..

You were right? Ish dont think so. 2 games doesn't prove anything.

In the last game against charlton, we had martyn and stubbs. No injuries for that one. Teams lose games for various reasons... we just happened to lose that one in the last few minutes.. charlton pushed and got the winner.

2 away tasks to london at tough enough teams in a matter of a few days is a hard assignment for any team. Beforehand I would have been happy with a point from each game as they were no doubt tough away fixtures.

We just had a bad couple of games. All teams have these patches.

but the top teams, like arsenal, bounce back. I can see everton gradually sliding down. Certainly dont think they will get a top 4 place, and will probaly miss out on europe.

only time will tell i suppose... all will depend on the next few games whether we bounce back or not...

everton wont make it into the champs league. they'll be lucky to even stay in the top 6.

god only knows how they managed to keep up with chelsea and arsenal up until christmas, now we'll see the normal everton, the everton that dont play above themselves. a hard run in, game after game will continue to take it's toll on everton's average players.

form is temporary, class is permanent and that is why everton can wave goodbye to the big boys as they press the 'nitro' button. everton dont have any nitros.

I think Everton have Nitros alright , but they've been using them for every game except the Arsenal one and the last two . The reason Everton were(they may not have stopped yet , as they had losts all games in London before the recent two , and it could just be their bogey run in London) doing so well is organisation , determination and formation(similer to Greece in the Euros) The 4-4-1-1 or the 4-1-4-1 has been working wonders for them this season , and Thomas Graveson(world class, and im not joking) is at the peak of his powers . Leon Osman and Tim Cahill seem to give them that bit of flair , and with Beatie looking likely to replace Bent , they could be grabbing quite a few more goals .

Im not sure if Everton will get Europe , but I defently can't see them lower than 7-8 .

Noone who fancies them for europe says they're going to match what arsenal and the other two do this season. Despite last weeks double whammy in London, Everton still remain 5 points clear of Boro in 5th with a friendly month ahead..

    Portsmouth home
    Middlesbrough away
    Charlton home
    Norwich home
    Southampton away

...wouldn't fancy any result at Boro but my money would be on 3 home wins there and maybe a 4th if Beattie makes the trip to Southampton :)

Not really seeing as its the second time this season so far they have been beaten by 3 or more goals. And the third time in 8 months that that has happened. Now do we really have to go and count the number of times they have conceeded three or more goals in a game?

Is that my theory coming back in the window?

They lost 4-1 to arsenal on the opening day. 3 goals is the biggest defeat this season.

The other games they lost by 1 at chelsea and vs spurs at home. Lost by 2 at charlton away:

    arsenal 4-1 (home)
    spurs 1-0 (home)
    chelsea 1-0 (away)
    charlton 2-0 (away)
    spurs 5-2 (away)

Whats that about your theory again?

Im using last season as well as the basis of my theory. I think thats fair enough seeing as they have the same manager and in the majority same players. They were beaten 5-1 on the last day of the season at home, and conceed three or more goals on five times in the last three months of the season.

Even looking at their defeats this season shows that they are likely to get hammered every now and again seeing as 2 out of 5 of them were big defeats.

apart from the man city game, which was the 5-1 defeat last season, they lost by no more than 3 goals throughout the season.

There is a very different atmosphere and 'team' at everton this season compared to previous seasons. The whole rooney thing was always hanging over them and various other issues. Radzinski was whinging like a baby for most of last season and there were a few inter-club greviences etc.
None of that is present this year, thus the totally different atmosphere at the club. The players who are there want to play for the team. Those that didnt were sold.

Even our change of formation has allowed players like gravesen to flourish more in that free role. Last season he couldnt get forward that much, as if he did there was only the other centre midfielder to cover really. Leon Osman and Tim Cahill have brought a new dimension to the team and the style of play as well. Marcus Bent is a totally different striker to rooney or ferguson or campbell or radzinski etc, so the team is 'different'.

Last seasons starting lineup would usually be:
    4-4-2
    Martyn/Wright (GK)
    Hibbert/Watson (RB)
    Yobo (CB)
    Stubbs/Weir (CB)
    Naysmith (LB)
    Kilbane (LW)
    Gravesen (CM)
    Linderoth/Nyarko (CM)
    Carsely/Watson (RW)
    Radzinski (CF)
    Campbell/Rooney (CF)

    This season:
    4-1-4-1
    Martyn/Wright (GK)
    Hibbert (RB)
    Stubbs (CB)
    Yobo/Weir (CB)
    Pistone (LB)
    Kilbane (LW)
    Gravesen (CM)
    Cahill(CM)
    Carsely (CDM)
    Osman (RW)
    Bent (CF)

The signing of beattie will also give us another dimension upfront.

They would want to hope not to lose more than once a season by four goals or more (I think that sounds better than "no more than three goals").

Im not getting into this argument again. But Im just going to go back on what I said. Everton got beaten badly, I think this will be their problem, as they can get beaten, and beaten badly, when you least expect it, or with a few injuries. The Man City game at the end of last season is an example.

It might be the most goals that they have conceeded since opening day, but then again Im sure if any team conceeded five, Im sure it would be the most they have conceeded in a while. I think that performance (I watched the game and it was a very poor performance) goes to show, that without a few key players at the back, they can be very very shaky.

about spurs anyway as most spurs fans will know they regularly do this get a few good results under their belt and make a push for top six but when it comes to maintaining form they are useless.
big test this week united at old trafford if they get a result out of that well all be amazed. spurs for europe would be great but i dont want to get my hopes up.the best i reckon we can hope for is top eight and possibly a good cup run. get rid of robbie in january (we dont need him to quote an old cliche "a scorer of great goals not a great scorer of goals") strengten our mid feild with a porven player not a flash in the pan youngster and then maybe we can talk europe

I,m a Man united fan and I had not seen a full spurs game since the new manager arrived but I was very surprised by the quality of their football againt Everton which is why I started the thread.

The way they passed the ball around for long spells with the Everton players constantly chasing it reminded me of united in the mid ninties. Now I,m not going to get carried away as Everton had a few Key players missing and they also have a very small squad so with the fixtures over christmas they could be just jaded but thats taking nothing away from the style of Spurs football which was impressive to say the least.

Taking that into account and the run of good results Tottenham have had lately I am worried about tuesdays nights game. I am sure united are in for a tougher one that usual. Regardless of what happens in the game having seen all the teams currently in the frame for fourth spot I havn't seen any that have impressed me as much as Tottenham did Saturday.
