Motor gone in HDD...

I have an 80gb hard drive here, but the motor's gone in it. It's not too important, but there's still a lot of stuff on it I'd like to get back - if I can. Does anyone know anywhere that will replace a motor in one? I was on to a company over in England a while ago, and they quoted me for £4000 (sterling) to recover it all or something like that. But that seems a bit ridiculous so if anyone has any ideas....

    Thanks.

I doubt anyone but the manufacturer would have the means replace the motor. Your only real hope would be to send it off to a company that will take the disks out and read them for you.

see if it is still under warranty. Though, they'll probably just replace it rather than repair it. Data recovery is an expensive business.

Motors are built in nowadays - so it would have to be fitted in a clean room.

Data recovery is done by taking the platters out of the drive in a clean room and reading the data off them directly - they don't repair drives.

Clean room - means space suits n' stuff, AFAIK in Intel you ex-smokers aren't allowed in their clean rooms unless it's been at least three years since you gave up.

Roughly 3% of drives die each year, backups are kinda important.
