Your best bet is to buy a prepaid Aussie SIM card, use that, and put a voicemail on your Irish number informing them of the Oz number to call

Otherwise you'll be charge a bloody fortune for the pleasue of roaming and you'll receive calls from people who probably *don't* need to be calling you

About the roaming, why not call O2 (or whoever) to confirm. It should work BTW

yeah it'll work out there. texting home is reasonable around 25 cents, roaming as u prob already know costs a fortune.

Sim card is best option !!! costs a bomb as you pay for the incoming call too !!!

my uncles livin out there at the moment and when he moved he brought his o2 pre-pay phone with him, with 100 credit, which was gone within 2 days fromringing home to say he was alright etc. He bought himself a ausie prepay simcard stuck it in his phone and is sorted, calls home arent even that expensive compared to the roaming charges.

I would doub-check with o2 to be safe though. I have a bill-phone and have used roaming on it before lots of times. However - I was in Prague last week and couldnt get roaming on it - rang o2 when I got back and they said from some "unknown" reason roaming had been switched off on my account!

No harm in double-checking with them.

And if you are going to get a SIM card down under, make sure you're phone is unlocked from the o2 network here before you go..

I bought a phone card for five aus $ thinking I would get a few minutes to call home. After I entered the pin the automated voice said 90 minutes remaining. I thought it was a mistake but no, calls home using these cards were only about 6 euro cent per minute. You have to be in the main cities to use them though because you need to make a local call and ringing the local number from outside the main cities can add up.

I can't remember the name of the cards but all the shops, camping sites, hotels have em. Just make sure not to get the national ones, ie the cards issued by the company that runs the phone system - it seems Eircom like companies are everywhere everywhere.

That happens to me a lot when I'm in the UK, and I keep on having to ring them to "re-provision" my number whatever that means to re-enable roaming.

if ur buying a oz sim card, make sure its not telstra, they charge 50 cent a go for a text! vodafone are the best

also buy a oz phonecard for phoning home, there are different ones for phoneing mobile phones at home which work out cheaper than a normal oz phone card. but as i said stay away from telstra
