Mario 64 DS confusion

In Mario 64 DS, the option screen, I have two options. The second one turns the screen backlight on or off, but can anyone tell me what the top one does? There's three choices and I cant tell what difference they're making. I have the Japanese version of the game if people are wondering why I'm so confused btw...

it changes the sound settings. stereo, mono and surround

yeah u can kinda hear the diff if the volume is really loud and surroundins are really quiet
