    Hi,
I just bought a new laptop. It came with XP home. I have XP pro on my old one and would like to use it on new laptop and then give home edition away when selling old laptop. I don't fancy going through every setting again (the way I have it set to not play any sounds at start-up, my wallpaper and the way I have the "classic" style instead of the XP style.

Is there any way to transfer everything onto the new laptop so it will be the way it is on my current one?

I have USB 2.0 and firewire on the new one.
I have USB 1 on the old.

I have an iRiver H-140 which can be used as an external HD to transfer files if it needs to be done that way.

    Thanks allot!

The short answer is no, the chances are that they have a different motherboard chipset etc. You will need to upgrade the new laptop to XP Pro and then copy your data files across.

ok thanks, but the new laptop is full of allot of crap, uk broadband services shortcuts, dvd shortcuts and probably allot of programmes I wont be using.

    What do you suggest so?

Format HD, install pro, then copy files from old to new?

Is there a file I need to copy in windows that will give me my desired settings? for example, no sounds at startup, having certain shortcuts in the quick launch, having certain icons displayed and not displayed in the system tray etc.

And then I can just copy other files if needed, personal files etc.

No you dont need to format the harddrive, remove any applications on the new laptop you dont need, using add/remove programmes in control panel, delete any shortcuts you dont need, and insert the XP Pro cd, it should install over the existing XP Home setup.

You can use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" utility in XP for transferring existing setup to a new P.C. but I have never used it, and know nothing about it. Check the Help files in XP for advice

    Cormie,

Was XP Pro bought with the first PC. If so the OS would not be transferrable. You will probably run into trouble with MS when you try to re-register XP-Pro on the new PC. You may be able to get an upgrade price though.
