    Aldi are grand.

I haven't heard of any problems with the Gericom laptops, I bought a 19" flat screen branded Gericom before and it was perfect,I only sold it as part of a pc package, otherwise i would have hung onto it.

If you can wait, you would be better getting a laptop in the states. Better and cheaper.

I bought this for 1499 a few months ago in Aldi, great laptop.2mb Dothan core chips rock! On a par with p4 3ghz but uses much less power...

Over the last 12 months, I bought 3 laptops (not all for me) with different configurations.

One is a Targa from Lidl, the other two are Gericom from Aldi. I am still using the Targa and am very very happy with it. The two owners of the Gericom are similarly happy with their purchase (and my recommendation). Hehehehe

Typically the laptops or PCs that you can buy here in Lidl or Aldi are the same configuration and same manufacturing quality etc. as the laptops and PCs that are sold by these two dicounters in Germany. Ok, in Ireland they charge somewhat more, but otherwise it is the same.

Aldi is in the meantime the largest German computer reseller!! This suggests that there must be a good few more happy customers than just myself. :) The competition in that market is fierce in Germany, this means the Computers are always close to the max spec for the given price.

The interesting thing is that the current Irish laptop price form the two dicounters is around EUR 1399-1499, the price for PCs is around EUR1100.

This means that no matter how long you wait, until now, the next model did cost more or less the same price, but had an improved spec. As a consequence DON'T wait for a cheaper one, you might wait a long time.

Surprisingly, however, the current offer IS below this "typical" price. So, if you have the money and if you need a laptop and if the spec sounds good to you: Go for it!

Great thing about Aldi (in comparison to Lidl) is that USUALLY you can order the laptop or PC if the ones in the shop are gone. So you might not have to queue for 1-2 hours to get one of the 15 in the shop. Unfortunately this is only experience, NOT a guarantee!!

dude in my class has a gericom, about 6 months old. Gets about 3 minutes from the battery on a full charge, it's also a brick.

You really can't judge hardware like this purely from the spec on paper, read some reviews if you can find them. I'm not into brand names in the slightest, but you get what you pay for, I wouldn't touch it.

I just said I had the same model and it's great. You're on about their desktop replacement which isn't up to much...bulky and eats power. (100w+ chip)

Dubal, you should go to the nearest shop and ask them if you can order it. I expected they would go really fast, but a friend of mine bought one a day after it was going on sale and even in Aldi in Parnell Street they still had a few left.

I expect that in stores like the one in Margaret Road in Finglas your chances are even higher.

Go to the nearest store and ask if they know of any other store that still has one OR if you can order the laptop. Unfortunately for you, you can't RING the stores, but if you get hold of a nice store manager, maybe he will ring one or two other stores for you to find out.

Give it a try and tell us about your experience!

Yo, does anyone who brought this have an exact read on the processor speed and the 9700's clock speeds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭carbsy

    It's a Pentium M 735 ie 1.7Ghz.Not fiddled with the 9700 yet so I can't comment.

Hey, I was up in the Aldi near Liffey Valley today to get one. The guy said he had none left and and that hes pretty sure all the other shops have none either. Anyways, I don't believe him, one of the shops must have at least one lying around. Has anyone who's been in an Aldi in the last day or so seen one? Figures when I finally have enough money........

Or, perhaps someone can point me to another good deal. Gotta have a 9700 or better tho
