paying postage on returned goods

    If you buy something online, and you return it, do you still have to pay the postage both ways?

    Got a telly tuner card. It doesn't record audio. Tried it with differetn software than that which was bundled with it. Rang their support and they said they didn't know what was wrong and I could send it back if I couldn;t get it working (overclockers.co.uk is the dealer)

    Not even sure it;s a dud. Seems odd that the audio plays ok on live tv and radio if it is a dud. Possibly some hardware conflict or compatibility issue.

    is a winfast tv2000 xp expert card.

    would be delighted with it except for this.

    i think it depends on the shops policy for returns but usually you're stuck with returns costs. e-mail them and ask them what's the story cos it's different for different companies

    Yeah, depends on the store. I returned a HDD to seagate ages ago, and didn't get refunded the postage, but I returned a DVD to cdwow, and they gave me a voucher for the value of the postage.

    If it really concerns you, kick up a stink, and most places will refund you.

    Normally you have to pay to send it to them and they'll pay to send it back.... Just like if you bought it in a real shop... you have to return it to the point of sale. Im guessing Cdwow were being nice ;)

    I think most places will refund you the post if it turns out to be a genuine fault. If howerver the card does work when they test it, they'll leave you with the cost as there's nothing wrong with the product.

    Before you send it back, check and make sure you have line-in enabled in your volume control panel, for recording and playback.

    You should also email the dealer and ask what their policy is. If it's faulty then they should pay, if not they're under no obligation to.

    Ok, dealt with a similar situation with Overclockers recently......

    I returned a motherboard to them; from their website I presumed I had to pay the postage costs. However when I emailed them, they said they would refund it if I faxed over the receipt. I haven't actually done this yet (idiots sent me the wrong thing AGAIN). Seems their policy is to refund if you ask.

    Note that in my case they sent me the wrong thing - i.e. they were clearly in the wrong. If you return something which isn't defective, it may be a different story.

    It uses a MiniDin 9-pin internal connector instead of a line-in for the audio. The line-in recording works fine: I can make mp3s out of tape cassettes if I link the earphones socket in the cassette player to the line in socket in the sound card with the cable I usually use to connect my speakers to the sound card. Will probably get a second cable like this so I can record mp3s of individual songs in this manner.
    The "aux" input is the one that it uses,,,, however i will look about the control panel to see if there is anythhing preventing this from being used for recording...it seems a reasonable explanation.
    Overclockers seem good at being nice to customers alright. The technical support guy said I could send it back if i couldn't get it working (even though we'd agreed it didn't sound like there was a hardware fault). But he didn;t mention postage costs. I found other forums on the net where people were having identical problems with the same card and eventually sorted it out without really seeming to know exactly how... The postage costs both ways would almost equal the price of the card. Don't think I'll return it even if I can't get this feature working.

    it's working now

    really excellent product, but the documentation leaves a lot up to the imagination

    nobody needs to know but setting the audio out control line to aux/line2 and the audio recording line to cd/video in. Don;t know why these are the settings that work it's plugged in to the aux connector on the motherboard not the cd one (the cd one has the cd player plugged into it :S )
