Keyboard problem

Strange one here: Just installed gentoo on a hp laptop. There's something strange about this machine, in that I need to append the kernel options "noapic nolapic" to allow it to boot. Anyhoo:

When it boots, everything seems to work fine until I get to the login prompt (tty, not graphical; no X installed). The keyboard doesn't respond. I ssh'd into it and played around with modules: no luck. Just for giggles I tried "cat /dev/psaux" to see if the touchpad was working - and the keyboard started to respond. Not only that, it echoed the characters I had typed while the keyboard was unresponsive.

    Um, wtf?

    Stage 3 install, genkernel 2.4.26-gentoo-r13.

maybe it in /dev/input or somewhat
it could alse be a usb problem, usb does strange things sometimes, especially since you menation acpi.
maybe recompile the kernel with modular usb support , basically change your settings, uhci instead of ohci or whatever. O_o
    ..... or something

Fuggit, don't have time to play with it: I just installed a minimal Debian Sarge instead.
