The true millennium

The question had to come up... plenty of you have surely had this conversation before...

    The Times, December 26th, 1799:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The present century will not terminate 'til 1 January, 1801"..."we shall not pursue this matter further"..."it is a silly, childish discussion and only exposes the want of brains of those who maintain a contrary opinion to that we have stated."</font>

According to the calendar system we have adopted, the Gregorian Calendar, which originally used Roman Numerals (which uses no "zero"), there was no year zero and Christs birth was dated as the year 1. When "BC" was introduced by Northumbrian Monk, the Venerable Bede, the number 'zero' still wasn't in use, so it went backwards straight from 1AD to 1BC. Of course this seems silly these days, - like going backwards from 11 to 9, but this is the way it is. (It's better explained in the Rough Guide to the Millennium, to be honest)... but what it all means is that this new Millennium of ours actually technically begins on January 1st 2001 ... coming (in just over 3 weeks time).

So who's gonna be celebrating the new millennium then, eh?
