    Spanish federation fined by FIFA
    Tuesday, 21 December 2004
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has been fined €65,000 by FIFA following racist chanting at November's international friendly match with England in Madrid.

    Players targeted
World football's ruling body announced the punishment this afternoon following a meeting of its disciplinary committee. Several black England players were targeted by sections of the crowd during their 1-0 defeat at Real Madrid CF's Santiago Bernabéu stadium on 17 November.

    Strong stance
The punishment also took into account racist abuse at the Under-21 match the previous evening. FIFA warned in a statement that any repeat of the racist behaviour could result in Spain playing behind closed doors or expulsion from one or several FIFA competitions.

    Madrid punished
Real Madrid, meanwhile, were fined €9,780 by UEFA on 10 December following the racist behaviour of some of their supporters during the UEFA Champions League game with Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 23 November.

This seemed to get very little coverage at all after all the controversy after the two England matches. Typical of UEFA to give the Spanish FA and Real almost no punishment. I remember Galatassaray getting away with no punishment a few years ago after a number of incidents. The Galatassaray president happens to be a vice-president of UEFA.

English fans are told before each finals tournament that any trouble and the team will be kicked out and any English footballer who gets himself in hot water finds Sepp Blatter on his back screaming blue murder.

You can be damn sure if it was Spanish players getting abuse in Old Trafford or Villa Park the FA would have received a huge fine or even forced to play behind closed gates.

The sooner UEFA handle everyone the same the better. And tells Blatter to mind his own business and stick to FIFA matters.

Like the governing bodies those fines are a joke for football clubs. Blatter and Co should be ashamed of themselves, they will never solve the problem until they get tough.

€65,000 is a joke and to put it in context, Joey NO BRAINS Barton was fine dby Man City £100,000, ie more than twice as much.

A much better punnishment would have been to play the next 3 home internationals behind closed doors. That would hurt the Spanish FA.

    Mike.

€65k is peanuts to the Spanish FA, tbh. They should have been made play their next home game or two behind closed doors at least.

How about increasing admission charges for the next three matches by about 20%.
The majority non-racist element would soon stop any racists from voicing their infantile opinions if threatened with future price hikes.
