    hello all,

I bought a Philips 17" TFT last Spetember 12 months in Harvey Normans (the price and the brand were trust-worthy, some Aussie mates would argue that Harvey is not ;))

Earlier today I was doing some regular browsing of the interweb, as you do, and all of a sudden the screen went white with a few lines of gray every so often. At first I though it had something to do with the link I had just clicked, but ctrl-alt-del had no result.

I rebooted the computer and instead of the regular boot sequence, there was the white screen as described above.

I had to get my old CRT from the attic (I forgot how heavy they are, nearly fell off the ladder) - which is what I'm using atm.

Rang Harvey Normans to see if I still had a warrenty, which I don't - but they said something about a repair service, and to bring it in so they could have a look...

I'm more used to solving software/hardware errors when it comes to my computer, the screen seems to be a totally different region - has anyone any advice on what to look for, as it might be a simple fix? Or do you think it's a job for a professional (i.e. money & no TFT for christmas gaming)?

    Thanks,

I have no idea about what went wrong but I'#d gldaly recommend the Sony HS74P which I got today and it's absolutely ****ing amazing.

Sorry about the screen - I hope it isn't an iPOD-esque thing and the screen-dies-after-warranty like battery-goes-kaput-after-warranty.

Perhaps calling Philips directly, often the manufacturer will be a lot more help than the retailer (e.g., Vodafone shop vs. Nokia centre).

youd be surprised where ringing the manafacture will get you, ive never delt with phillips myself, but others (toshiba and sony, to name two) i have seen them repair out of warrenty items for free as the owners have lost reciepts and dont know date of purchase.(these items were out of warrenty by about 3-5 months, and i told people to ring them to try, no harm, and it wasnt a problem)

Strange, I thought EU law stated that all electrical products had a minimum statutory 24 month guarantee.

Got onto to Philips support phone number - they looked for the serial number off the back and told me I had a 3 year warrenty - not 1 year like Harvey Normans said! They're sending out a replacement on Christmas Eve, or the following Monday, depending on if they're working or not... :)

Make sure you get a second opinion on it. If you ring these guys and ask them...

Most monitors carry a 3 years manufacturers warranty.
