I buy a fair bit online and have not come across this before. The other day I bought an item on e-bay. When processing the transaction I was directed to the sellers online store, thats fine. However when I was paying by C.C(Visa) Paypal was involved. I had to enter a username + passwrd for Paypal, in otherwords open a Paypal account. The transaction was then processed as normal. What's the story here. I have heard of Paypal of course but have never asked for or opened an account with them. What's going on???

You must have an account with paypal in order to send cash through it. It's as simple as that. You can re-use the account at any time in the future.

If you just registered with Paypal, it may take a couple of days before you can use it as your account needs to verified. If you have your CC on online banking, it will speed up the process.

Yeh, I should have mentioned that too I guess.....

They deduct 1.50 Euro (roughly...) from your card, you get a reference number off your statement (or from your online banking)... they refund it then again 2 or 3 weeks later.

    It's all above board :)

A lot of smaller online retailers cannot open a merchant VISA or Mastercard account therefore they use Paypal.

I have sold 15 items on ebay over the last 2 weeks and everyone of the buyers have paid by Paypal. I prefer other payment methods because of the fees associated with Paypal.

Appericate the info although I still do not understand why Paypal has to be involved with what is a Cerdit Card transaction(Visa). I have completed lots + lots of cc transactions without PayPal coming into the equasion. For instance when you purchase something from Komplett there is no mention of PayPal, the funds go from my visa account directly to Komplett's account. Now if PayPal is to facilitate cash transactions in some way I can understand that but when its a Credit Card transaction unless they are acting as a middle man between the account of the retailer and the account of the buyer but why?.

The site you bought from does not have a merchant credit card account (probably not big enoungh to justify the process and expense or he is in the process of getting verified). The only way he accepts credit card payments is through Paypal and it is very easy to set up. That is why they are involved.

Komplett are huge and have merchant credit card accounts therefore they do not need Paypal.
