Ok baiscally this is such a grey area, and I get the feeling I may be tasked at work to develop some type of net analysis system. Baiscally what I want to learn is how to monitor bandwith usage over time, im sure you guys know the type of software in talking about, command line scripts or such that will show bandwidth usage/ whose using it, what ip's are requesting the most etc. Ive googled and looked at some forums, apart from vague hints at iptables logging I'm at a loss, I cant find much conclusive info, flamegrill , I'm guessing this is your area of expertise, if I could get some pointers , online guides or such. that would be awesome. ty.

Have you checked out the Freshmeat site?

There are hoards of applications there that will do exactly what your looking for.
I'd recommend checking out Ntop first, its excellent.

You can use cacti go get an overall view of snmp enabled switchs, traffic going over each port etc.

Ntop is a very usefull tool for monitoring all sorts of traffic and handy for pulling reports on people who use the most bandwidth etc.

nice flame, Ill have a look at cacti tomorrow, I had a good read up on ntop earlier today at work, looks like it will do the job. Has a built in web interface too which should come in handy.

nagios is pretty nifty, but it doesnt monitor bandwidth/network stuff too much, we use it in work to monitor the status of services / machines on the network, and when something breaks it emails us. you can write plugins for nagios to monitor the network, but it wont really display stuff too well graphically, try ganglia for that type of stuff before going to nagios.
