I dont know whether dogs come back as ghosts or not. But in your case, maybe just remember the dog, and let him go. Trying to sense him as a ghost will only mess with your head. It may sound glib, but when your ready, get a new dog.

Bart: "Is there a doggy hell? "
Homer: "Well... Of course, there couldn't be a heaven if there weren't a hell. "
    Bart: "Who's in there? "
Homer: "Oh, uh... Hitler's dog... and that dog Nixon had, what's his name, um, Chester... "
    Lisa: "Checkers. "
Homer: "Yeah! One of the Lassies is in there, too. The mean one! The one that mauled Timmy!"

While I'm not as knowledgeable on spiritual matters as I'd like to be, I think there's a strong chance he's watching over you. I can relate to this as my mum is in a similar situation. Also, it's not stupid at all to think this. There's a lot of things people still don't understand aout the paranormal, and I've learnt also that science can't explain everything about it. I've drawn this conclusion from practical experience and other experiences.

    Hope this helps :)

Exerting yourself like that would indeed mess with your head. Normally, they would let you know they are there anyway, without you trying, ie, when you feel a tingle on your face, smell a smell think of someone, etc.

When people lose an arm, they can still "feel" the arm still there. I dont see why the same principle can not apply to lost people or animals.

People/animals are slightly different to a phantom limb though, but I do get what you're saying.
