Sound on XP only works sometimes?

    A really annoying problem!!

Have had this problem ever since i got my "new" PC (about 3 years old) but never bothered trying to really fix it.

It's really irritating.. i switch on the computer and most of the time, the XP logo will show for about 20 seconds. Then, the XP logo will disappear and Windows will startup.

However, a fair bit of the time, the computer will startup and the XP logo will show on screen for a couple of minutes!!!.

Then, Windows will startup and the sound will not work! My Device Manager shows no faulty soundcard or anything.

Any idea why this could be? Any suggestions are welcome!

Have you got a lot of stuff starting up in background that slows computer down maybe?Maybe go onto site of the name of your Pc and download new drivers or if you know what make your soundcard is goto offical website.

have you defraged hardrive since you got Pc also?

    Am using XP.

Defragmented the hard-drive many times. It's possible that there's a lot running on startup but why would it only affect the sound sometimes, and not always?

Got the newest drivers for my soundcard too...

    It's really a mystery!

At the phase of loading where you'd see the XP logo, it'd generally be loading more low-level parts of the OS... things like startup apps wouldn't even come into the equation at this point.
On a hunch, I'd say XP is having difficulty detecting/interfacing with the card for some reason.
You say that device manager doesn't show any bad devices, but does your soundcard still show up in device manager when the sound isn't working?
I'm not sure weather your sound device is onboard or an expansion card, but since you refer to it as a "sound card", I'll assume it's a card :o
I'd try re-seating it... (ie. taking the card out, checking the contacts and putting it back in again)
Also download the latest drivers for your motherboard chipset, since you've got any number of onboard controllers at play here.

What soundcard are you using is it a Creative by any chance? If you added it after you bought the PC have you disabled the onboard sound in the bios?

Have you considered doing a complete reinstall of windows? I know its messy but it can work wonders too:)

3 year Installation of Windows (even XP) = The Thing That Should Not BE!

If I were you I'd save time and reinstall - I'm not trying to be lazy but with an installation that old it'll be badly bloated no matter how well you took care of it.
