    Hi,

Just setup the new system and my 3.2G is being detected as a 2.4G...any ideas why??..

Not to up on how to configure all the 'user-defined' settings in my BIOS..

    Appreciate any advice.

    Thanks.

will be a very helpful if you let us know what are you system specs... there's possibility that your mobo does not support that CPU clock.. or require new BIOS.. etc.. again, let us know what is ur build...

Download CPUZ it should give you the most accurate read out.
Is the system new of did you buy it secondhand? because the previous owner may have OC it and then just reset everything before he sold it. let us know how you get on with CPUz.

    <edit> removed confusing + symbols...replaced with "P4" where appropriate :) </edit>

This is the default setting. I take it you built this yourself? My 2800+ was recognised as an 1800+ when I first turned the computer on. It's set low so you don't fry your processor.

You need to set your FSB (Front side bus) and multiplier speeds in your bios.

Check the intel site for what they should be for a P4 3.2GHz (actually, you're probably multiplier locked (i.e. it can't be changed)) so it'll just be bus speed.

A quick run to the calculator and it looks like your bus needs to be 1.33 times whatever it is now.

That is, of course, if you really have a P4 3.2GHz. If you bought it off a reputable company, then there should be no problem.

    HTH.

Surely you mean check the AMD site for a 3200? And doesn't a 3200 only clock at 2.4GHz anyway?

No it clocks at between 2 and 2.2

I asumed P4 maybe its AMD chip he has.

I made the same assumption. Silly me. The AMD 3200's clock at 2-2.2 GHz allright, so it was probably a fair assumption (but only with hindsight ;)).

I'm sticking with my guess :)

    yep..it's P4...all brand new parts. Abit IC-7, 200G SATA HDD, 1G mem...

I'll check out the intel site and have a go at that setting change..

    Thanks!

I've never heard of an intel board setting a different fsb than it should and the multi is locked so their should be no trouble. Update your BIOS and your problem will be solved. Abit have a very handy tool called "flashmenu" that allows you to backup your old BIOS and update to the new version from within windows. You can get it on their site.

If you had fast RAM you could really take advantage of your situation by cranking the fsb up to give you a huge system fsb with really fast ram speeds. Take a note of what BIOS version your running now and what processor it is. I'm sure some overclockers would be interested in it. I heard of some 3.2's being misread as 2.8's on asus boards but never 2.4 on abits.

i went into the bios and changed the multiplier to 15 and now the overall CPU spped is 3.0G.

I think the fsb is set to 200...(showing a max allowed of 400)...would I be pushing it to change the fsb to 300ish???

    Yes you would.

    15 * 300 = 4.5Ghz

dont think so, not unless your on Phase Cooling.

JAYSUS. P4's are multiplier locked, nay people? (I don't own one).

Also....FSB of 200 and a 15x multiplier makes me nervous if your board is capable of 400. I remember seeing that the newer P4's could run at very high bus speeds, but that the ram would be running much slower (at 400ddr for the chip, it would be half that).

Man, I think it's safe to say that you should go to the intel site and find out what's what there. Better to be safe than crying in your coffee.

the multi is lock for going up but you can drop it! it is weird that it didnt pick up the CPU speed as 3.2, I put in my 3.4 and power up the system it automatically set to 3.4! not a chance and hope you gonna push it anywhere near 300 FSB with that lovely Intel cooling, try play a game that uses alot of CPU power running your CPU at stock it may even crashes out to windows cos the CPU hits high temps! I tried mine with prime95 stress test and it wont even pass the test at stock speed, again with lovely Intel Heatsink and Fan, even if I dont put on the heating in the house, freezing like hell and wear lots of cloths to keep myself warm with the window open, thats my actual window in the house, room temps at 5c but still Intel managed to keep the CPU nice and warm even then, 37c idle and no way passing stress test at 3.4! but watercooling yes it works alot better!

yo bloodbath, bios update is a good suggestion but how come most the time I see your post replying to a question that had nothing to do with overclock, theres always a few lines to do with overclock???? is that all you do with a PC, just overclock and gaming benchmarks?

Because some people may be interested in what BIOS he is running to get it to read as 2.4. A lot of people have fast ram that they can't push as far as they like because the multi is locked. I'd be pretty interested myself as I have an Abit board and I know my ram would do at least 550mhz with higher timings. If you check my posts you would see only a small number are about overclocking unless it has some sort of relevance to what's going on. Does it bother you or something?

it just confuses people that dont know enough as it is without going on about overclocking! sure I've got an abit board too, and I've a whole new set of watercooling coming in for OC but I didnt bother mention that on my last post as thats not relevance to this thread!

Fair enough but all I want to know is what BIOS revision he's using. It makes no difference in your situation but I have ddr4000. I'd like to crank it a little higher if I can. Jesus you can't say anything on boards these days.

    Totally Agree.

Over the last week I read at least 5 different threads where some other member would post and criticize that to much info was been given out to the user. Its starting to get a bit mad when your been told your giving out to much info to the original poster. Not to criticize StRiKeR here, but if someone thinks that the user could do with more info (or would benefit from more info) than he/she asked for then its there right to give it.

More agreement here. We're getting OT, but there has been a lot of "that's too much information" in threads recently. Personally, too much > too little.

There was no 3.2 processor when the IC7 came out.
