I have a monitor that doesn't work very well, it's always too dark, even with the brightness set up to highest, i can't watch DVDs and i can barely play games, now this seems like a bit of a stupid question but i've been looking for ages and can't seem to solve the problem myself:

Does windows have any sort of display brightness setting i can alter?

What version of Windows? Most video cards have a option to raise the brightness/gamma. Go to Control Panel->Display->Setting TAB->click advanced. In there you should find a TAB about image and you should see sliders which should allow you to make things a little brighter. But, the best thing to do is to dump the monitor and pick up another. a secondhand one can be picked up for 50euro if you look in the buy&sell.

Many games, some DVD software and the settings kerbdog mentioned above will have a 'gamma' setting. Increase this as needed.

Try using Degauss option on the monitor menu if it has one!

my Dell 21" monitor was too bright. turned out it was a manufacturing fault. cracked it open and soldered in a resistor to bring the brightness down. works perfect now.

might wanna google the problem and see if its happened to anyone else.

I use to have a dodgy old dark gateway monitor, then I found used a great shareware program that had hotkeys to increase gamma to rediculous levels,

    it's called powerstrip
