Can anyone offer advice on the following monitor I'm look at getting.

I'll mainly need it for graphic design and gaming.

    Cheers

    19" Dell Monitor

I'd look for a TFT with a faster response time for gaming. Also be aware that you can't use a TFT with multiple resolutions, and the colours are nowhere near as consistent as regular CRT screen. That said most TFT's are good enough for graphic design. The Dell monitor is fine, but there are better monitors out there if you shop around. Also TFT's can come with a certain number of defective pixels. Check what the policy is on return the item if you are not happy with the amount of dead pixels, incase you get a monitor with some.

Personally I cant understand why anyone would buy a 19" LCD - they are bigger in size and have the same resolution as a 17" (1280*1024)- which to my mind would acutally make the pixels bigger and the display less sharp than a 17". Certainly I dont see much advantage in them at all.

(Im willing to be corrected though.)

Save your money get a 17" with high response times. Also check out www.komplett.ie for a good range of lcd's.

Personally unless you can afford a 20" LCD (€900) that does 1600x1200 I would save my money - and buy a 17". Bear in mind that LCD monitors only look good in their native resolution - unless its a fast moving game - where the 'non-native blur' is not quite as noticeable.

It would drive you mad doing design work in anything else but the native resolution. If you are serious you will get more flexibility in a good big CRT tbh.

Not everyone likes the really small text at high res. Also if you a gaming running at 1600x1200 needs a lot more horsepower than a lower res. BTW 1280x1024 is an odd ratio. Some games don't support it.

Have to say I prefer two monitors to one really big one. TFT's are great in multi monitor setups.

Lots of truths there alright - you do need a beast of a machine to run games at 1600 - and there are a number of games I have that dont have 1280 as an option.

The advantage of a tft with small text is that you can sit closer to it than a CRT without getting eye cancer ;)
