Seen an article in the paper for a new satelite provider in ireland.Bt i have forgotten the name of it.

It was the following that caught my eye, It uses the Astra satellite for i was thinking i could fit the quab lnb i have and use the two feeds for the two sky boxes i need to install.

The other one i could u se for this. It only costs €30.00 a month as well. Thats the same as Anytime i am on now.

Is this possible and any one remenber the name of them?

The catch is that you need a back link so you would still have to keep the anytime to send the mouse cliks back to the ground station. Also while ok for downloads / casual browsing, the lag of ~1 second kills off lots of interactive stuff especially gaming.

and then there is the slight issue of contention / caps

Satellite is a tried and tested mechanism for transmitting signals hence the success of companies like Sky Digital. This will ensure that you receive high quality, uninterrupted broadband 24 hours a day.

    UNLESS IT RAINS!!

Their installation + equipment fee was a mere €500 a few weeks back. Now it's a bargain basement, dese prices must end soooon, fee of only €350. Plus a connection fee of €40.

If you're after one-way satellite, Central Point have received generally good feedback from a number of users on ispreview.

Absolute Ripoff for only a one way broadband service. Here is another provider, cheaper for installation and subscription. They are also using astra aswell.

falteringstar makes a good point. Data transmissions over satellite are much more sensitive to a drop in signal quality than video transmissions. Especially important when you consider that Valentia weather station records the highest year round rainfall levels in western Europe! So while it might be convenient to use an existing Sky minidish, it would be well worth investing in a 90/100cm dish for DVB data services from Astra2.

Quick (dumb) question (and I have looked on a few of the sites)...

The one way broadband - now I get the uploading bit when it comes to mails etc, but does that also include stuff like contributing/talking rubbish on forums, making purchases etc?

Satellite Broadband is a waste of money.

Try Leap (1Mbit low contention BB wireless) or Irish Broadband wireless.

Performance is poor. To get similar to lowest level copper or wireless BB pack you need about 300 Euro a month.
Even then they won't let you stream or host anything.

It is for the really desparate with NO phone line at all and no prospect of wireless BB either.

Also you need a 90cm dish, and if I was pay as much as Sat BB costs per month I wouldn't scrimp, I'd use a 1.2m dish. Also the upload speed is dish size limited.

Yes. All uploading has to go via the phone line.

I used to have One Way satellite internet access with both Europe Online and Netsystem.

Europe Online (EON) wasn't really internet access as such (at the time) but more a tool for downloading stuff. I used to download perhaps 10GB of data per day, though most of it was rubbish. Then they changed and moved from Astra. Netsystem was an internet provider but they had throttled IRC, P2P, etc. It used to be fine after midnight or so but during the early evening, it was sometimes slower than dialup due to too many using it at same time.

All in all, I dont think i'd use another one way sat setup again, though thanks to both companies above for the free Skystar 2 DVB cards! :D

I had a 2 way system from direcway for about 2 years. It was very poor uploading about the same as isdn and down was around the same as dsl . These systems are no use for voip gaming or anything that requires instant response .
Even using icq was a right pain in the arse.

You don't need a 1.2 dish the standard dish is fine .You won't loose any data there's error correction built in .

My mate still uses oneway sat and he has a number of accounts with different providers. He's getting about 100gb a month .
