No Phone/Sky Installv question

I appreciate this may have been asked before, I'm just looking for an up-to date answer. I know there is similar stuff in this thread but I didn't want to spoil someone elses.

My next-door neighbours, both non-nationals and renting, signed up with the local installer today for the free install. As they are renting, they do not have and will not be getting a phone line connected (even thought the physical cable is connected to the building).

They told the installer this, who charged €85 for a "NO-PHONE" install (it's what it says on the receipt). I know the Sky contract specifically mentions the must-be-connected bit but is this the new(old?) way out for non-phone people?

I assume the €85 is some number Sky came up with as the amount of extra money they make from people on top of a standard contract...?

Any info would be appreciated and I'll bet Tony will be the first back with a definitive answer on this one ... ;)

The €85 is absolutey nothing to do with sky, as far as they are concerned the box should still be connected to the phone so there is a technical breach of contract here.

Some installers were told unofficially by Mr. Ed Sawday of sky to go ahead and do no phone installs anyway, at the time sky were clawing back the install fees of any box which failed callback.

This ill thought out policy seems to have fallen by the wayside in the face of falling sales.

Nothing like falling revenue to concentrate the mind.

What happens, and I am assuming it must happen a lot, if the installer does the install as a phone line install and the purchaser waves goodbye to the installer and pulls the phone line out 20 minutes later and leaves it that way???
    And what does clawback mean?

Thanks Tony (see I knew you'd be first :D )

Do you think it's a good idea for them to continue with the install, given that their English is only so-so and I know they wouldn't appreciate the finer points of the contract - I'd really like to help these guys out as they're good people and I'd hate to see them get stung for something like this

Breach of the contract - it specifially says you must leave it connected - whether Sky'll catch you or not is another question.

Clawback is Sky sucking you dry for the remainder of the subsidy cost of the box and dish (currently stands at about €380 I think). I haven't ever heard of anybody getting nailed for this though....

well what used to happen is sky would not pay the retailer the install fee, totally unfair as its out of his control, clawback means taking money back that has previosly been paid

    Thanks .

Its really difficult to say but I can tell you that I dont know of any instances were sky have tried to get money back from the customer, thats not to say that it has not or will not happen in the future. Retailers generally (including me) have taken the hits on this so far.

Fair play to you for helping out our brothers from overseas

Thats exactly what I did, and the guy selling me the sky package told me to do it I think (3 years ago now)

I rang up Sky today [0818 719 802, Sky Ireland published number rings through to Scotland]. I just moved house and want to get a decent TV system in. I decided to go with Sky, unless they enforced the phone line.

I was told, without any threats from me, that Sky no longer enforce the phone line demand in Ireland. Not sure about the UK. I then asked him if there was an penalty for this and he said no.

I wanted Sky+Moveie World, and I asked him about multi room. He said that if I order Sky +, I get the Sky digibox as well, and can put that into a seperate room.

So, I get Sk Digi, Sky +, multiroom [except the + part] and I have no phone line all without the multiroom charge and the Sky+ subs coz I'm getting the movie world package.

Sounds too good to be true

It does, at the very least the will want a connection for multiroom to ensure the second card is not being used elsewhere, this is being enforced at present
