Has anyone looked at this and tried developing yet ? It looks really interesting but the lack of windows.forms native support puts me off.

Well, you can firmly blame MS for that one, as they have a patent on Forms. There is a substitute than can be used, isn't there? Or does it have to be GDI instead? I want to be able to use .NET as well as Java in Linux, but I can't seem to find reference to it anywhere...

I dont think Microsft have any kind of paten on windows.forms . The next version of Mono (1.2) - due early next year will feature an implementation of Windows.Forms . This (In theory) will allow lots of .NET programs written for windows to run on Linux /Freebsd etc..
You can download the beta version of this at http://www.go-mono.com

Hmm... So it is... Last I had heard there was some legal difficulty involved, though I had heard it involving patents... Well, I stand corrected.

I used Mono on a couple of occasions to develop command-line utilities which ran unattended on a Linux box and involved - among other things - reading and writing data to/from a MS SQL Server. The demands placed upon it were fairly light but it did exactly what I expected every time without fail.

On both occasions I did most of the development in the MS IDE and simply copied the code over. It compiled and ran with no modifications. Having come from the MS IDE, I found that MonoDevelop left something to be desired but it is a work in progress and will, I'm sure, improve.

System.Windows.Forms support is scheduled to be included in the 1.2 release (due in Q2 of 2005).

I believe ASP.NET works very well but I haven't tried this out myself.

Overall I think it's a great technology which is still quite young and can only get better. It's definitely worth checking out.
