Big trouble with Outlook

I've got a big problem with Outlook,
I was trying to get Outlok on my bosses PC synchronized with his off line folders.
I downloaded a microsoft help page and made some changes.
When I closed and re-started Outlook 2002, it will no longer start!
    It says that
"Before you can use the offline folder file (the new one that I created for him) you must connect to your Microsoft Exchange Server with the current profile and synchronize your folders at least once"

But I can't sync them because Outlok won't open, and the MS file never said to sync them before restating the application.

    Anybody go any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Do his offline folders contain any mails that wouldn't be on the Exchange Server - i.e has he created some mails and saved others to his Outbox?

If not, you can just delete outlook.ost and restart Outlook. It'll automatically regenerate the offline folders file.

I got Outlook working again so panic averted.
    I've still got a job :-)
But the original problem is still there.
the error messege reads like this:
    17:39:18 Error synchronizing folder
    17:39:18 [800CCE05-3EE-800CCE05-550]
    17:39:18 Unknown Error.
17:39:18 Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store
17:39:18 For more information on this failure, click the URL below:
    17:39:18 http://www.microsoft.com/support/prodredirect/outlook2000_us.asp?err=800cce05-3ee-800cce05-550

The problem occours when his inbox is synchronized, all his other folders are ok, just his inbox.

    Seamus thanks for the reply.

Do a search for scanost.exe and run it on his outlook.ost file. </guesswork>

    There are two:
scanpst.exe for psts (Personal Folders Files)
scanost.exe for osts (Offline Folder Files)

could you maybe confirm that your mail server is in fact an exchange server and your not connecting to a pop or smtp server?
