    just a quick question..
is there a way of saving a streaming video (from quicktime or media player) onto your hard-drive?

i heard about a way of changing the temperory internet files folder or something, but don't know if it works with streaming video?
if it does work, how exactly is it done?

i have used a piece of software to "record" streaming videos in the past. cant remember the name but i got it by doin a google search, it was a trial version of a recorder for windows media player.

    it worked a treat aswell.

    ok,
i'm downloading 'Streamdown' at the minute which records the media but ..about the other way, isn't it possible?
while streaming media doesn't windows temporarily save the streaming media into a tempory folder which can then be saved properly on the hard-drive?

if you open a media player stream file with notepad you should get the true address of the file which you can then save.

for the likes of .smil files use a prog called net transport.

I'm trying to record a QuickTime movie myself; someone saved it to disk for me as a .mov file, but it's a bit of a kludge, and I can't save it as VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and contents and have it play properly.

This is the movie I want to save, by the way:

My oul' fella appears in it.

Yeah Xi Net Transport will allow you rip down the streaming file to your hard drive from where you can edit it/burn it whatever - Works for video and audio, *.rm, *.asx, whatever. Here's the link:

    http://www.xi-soft.com/download.htm

And as for *.mov to DVD, you should go to:

http://www.videohelp.com/convert - This has guides on how to convert various formats to DVD-playable *.vobs or whatever.

On the same subject anyone know a good (free if possible) app for recording internet radio, again no specific url per song.

If you're unable to view the source to see what's being opened as the movie, you can try using a packet sniffer and see what actual web requests are being made by your browser. Ethereal is a good choice for this. Once you know the actual URL of the video you can pop that into your weapon of choice for saving streams and away you go.

i've tried various software including streamdown, streambox and mplayer but still can't get my streams downloaded..
obviously i'm no expert and havn't spent much time with the software..
one of the main streams i'm trying to get is: mms://ds103.xs4all.nl/damienrice_300.wmv

what's the easiest way to get it fully recorded onto my hard-drive?

Can't see why you needed the password. Here's a direct link:

    http://www.axitech.hu/nettransport/downloads/NT2Setup_multi.exe

And as for you folks looking to record streaming audio with no source, give HiCriteria's Total Recorder a crack. It buffers a whole lump of the audio faster than real time and lays it down as a WAV file for you. Shareware though.

If that's the Damien Rice Paradiso show, someone ripped it ages ago - You can download it direct via FTP from:

    ftp://damienricetrading.serveftp.com

    user: damien
    password: rice

(Might take you a few goes to get into the FTP though - It's pretty busy usually)

For those of you in this thread looking an easy way to record AUDIO streams (ie something that does it for you without all the code) hunt up a copy of a freeware program called OPd2d.
Google should turn it up easy enough.
It's a very small app that uses your soundcard's output and converts it to either a .wav or an .mp3 (providing you buy or illegally d/l an mp3 codec) and copies it in real time to your harddrive.
Real nice, small UI and nice options such as a timer to enable you to record a certain length of time.

It doesn't work with video streams.

is there anyway you can find out the url? like if you use netscape and go page source on a page i think it shows you every detail of each page, even if its flash.

There's plenty of legal mp3 encoders! LAME for instance!

If you use Mozilla stream the video, then go to the Mozilla cache folder. Click on modified in the tool bar. This will sort the cache into the earliest received down to the latest. Go to the most recent cached item and add a file type. This will depend on what you have just streamed, e.g. if it was a Quicktime file then add .mov. Now double ckick the cached item and voila! I haven't tried this with real player but it works for all movie types. Ensure that tour cache is set tp a decent size if you are streaming big files.
