Please understand this is NOT a troll..

My Grandmother is 79, reasonably healthy but recently she has begun to get heavily depressed about her weight. She is quite large tbh, I don't know what she weighs but I'd say it's somewhere in the region of 18st. She's 5'5.
I love my Grandmother to bits and don't like to see her like this. Any tips for elderly exercise/diet? Just to make her feel better...

    Thank you,
    B

Taking into consideration her age and her size it would be unwise to offer advise. She would need to get an assessment from her Doctor before she starts any type of exercise routine.

But in the mean time a helathier diet would be a start.

And therin lies the problem, because she feels down about her weight, she's "comfort eating". Chocolate etc. Would cutting down on her sugar be good or bad? She has two teaspoons in tea and (like most grannies I know) has about ten-fifteen cups a day! I know that cutting sugar down is generally a good idea but I wasn't too sure about it with her re: her age, would she need that much?

Sorry if I come across a bit thick, I really know f-all about dietry/ nutrition etc. :)

    Hi Papa Smut,

A healthier diet is indeed the way to start. Off hand a really good one that's easy to follow is the Weight Watchers program. That way she can have a few of her chocolate snacks and so forth. My mother has had great results with it, as has my father. There have been several posts on the board already in regards to it so that would be a good start.

Their cookbook is excellent and could possibly make a great Christmas gift this year, if she's the cooking type. In particular I recomend the beef teryaki, ginger chicken and sweet and sour pork recipies. Gorgeous taste, healthy and balanced and low fat!
